You have a bad cartridge. You need to replace it to work right again. there is a small block in it some where.

you need to pull apart the handle and rotate the cartridge 180 and reassemble and that will put the hot on the left and the cold on the right before you put the screws all back in test it to make sure its correct then reassemble IF THIS HELPED YOU PLEASE VOTE FOR ME AND LEAVE GOOD FEEDBACK

The hot and cold are reversed on our single handle shower (no tub faucet -- shower only)

Hot on left.
Cold on right.
Some single handle faucets have bleed-over where both hot and cold enter mixing valve each time handle is turned on, even when faucet calls for just cold or just hot.
Otherwise maybe a do-it-yourself plumber got pipes backwards... or maybe the tub used to be on other side of wall, and tub was moved during remodeling but pipes were not changed.

To fix problem:
First of all, turn off shower faucet. Turn on Hot at sink and put ear against shower faucet listening for sound of water flowing through the mixing valve.
If mixing valve is working fine, you need to open wall and investigate more.
For example if you have access door, reach in and feel which pipe is hot.
Pipes might need to be reversed if problem comes up in home inspection, otherwise the problem will not harm anything.

Moen and all shower valve manufacturers follow american federal guidelines. Hold the unit in your hand with the handle facing you - the left side is the hot water inlet and the right side is the cold water inlet.

How do you adjust the hot and cold on the shower. it wasn't working so my husband took out the screws on either side of the face plate, now hot and cold reversed

The cartridge just needs to be turned 180 degrees to put hot and cold on respective sides. As far adjusting temp., right behinde handle there should be two pieces bigger one goes in first. The smaller of the two is more ring like with a sqare on top, the more the sqare is rotated to the left, the more the handle can turn to the hot side of valve. I hope that makes sense.

Water is either hot or cold

yes, the valve should be close at the downward postion. and the water should be clod to hot from left to right.
open the handle and pull out the cartridge.
make sure the valve body is installed right side up.
if it is, insert the cartridge with the lock pin on top.
reinstall the handle.
