I have a new in box BC780XLT scanner that I just purchased off of ebay. I may have discovered why it has never been used ! The volume is much to HIGH, and seems to have very little variation from all the...

The BC780XLT is a 2000 model, so your "new" scanner is actually about 10 years old. Your lack of volume control indicates that the ON/OFF/VOLUME control "pot" is defective and needs to be replaced. It looks to be on the same shaft as the SQUELCH, so the Uniden part is likely a combination of the two controls. I suggest that you contact Uniden Customer Service (see link below) and inquire about parts availability and/or factory repair. Due to the age of the unit though, there's a good chance that the control is no longer available -- unless it's being used on a newer model as well. Your other option is to try to work out a return or file an eBay/PayPal claim. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Can a bearcat bc780hlt be made digital?

Sorry, but there is no APCO-25 (digital) card/adapter available for your scanner. If all or some of your local services have switched to digital, you'll need to purchase a different scanner - such as the Uniden BCD996XT or the brand new Uniden HomePatrol-1.

How to reset my uniden 780xlt scanner

There is no "soft" reset for the BC780XLT, and the following "hard" reset will erase all programmed data and return the scanner to its original factory settings.

- Power the scanner OFF.
- Press and hold the 2, 9, and MANUAL keys and power the scanner ON.

Manual

That model was the first prototype of the Uniden Bearcat Electra BC780XLT-PPKL88 otherwise known as the BC780XLT. That manual that you got for the XLT model should work just fine, the only difference is that the XLT has more features than the HLT. The HLT came with its own manual, but it wasn't very accurate either, just try to make due with the manual you've got. If you want a scanner that is easier to use, you should get a Regency Touch K500. The Touch K500 can scan up to the 900MHz range and has VHF/UHF/FM/AM/CB/WX/AIR scanning capabilities. It even comes pre-programmed with international channels. It also has an automatic Weather Alert Notifier Bank already programmed into its internal memory. In short, the K500 is the ultimate scanner. However it will be hard to find because Regency went out of business a while back.

Good Luck!

Getting stuck on trunked stations?

This is a digital trunk, you wont be able to pick these up on the bc780, it only does analog trunk systems. Some trunks use mixed analog/digital, if you can figure out which ID's are using digital you can lock them out. Even worse is the fact that the ID's you lock out are probably the ones that you are trying to monitor :(
