Try pluggin it in a different usb port. The SD should use a memory card right? (SD card) So why don't you try SD + card reader?

I cannot format my brand new SD card with my Canon Powershot 970 IS. It is a 4G, however i just tried an old 1G and it will not format that one either .... perplexed.

Try another type of SD card as the Canon camera are very choosy with regards to SD card. All I want to say that, not all SD card will work on Canon camera. Or if you insist of using your SD card you have to format it in your computer using Canon formatting software which is downloadable in the website.

How much memory can be expanded to maximum in canon sd790??rushab

You can expand the memory as much as you want. The SD790 uses SD and SDHC cards, which go up to 32GB each. You can swap cards in and out, as many as you want. However, I would strongly suggest you transfer the pictures to your computer on a regular basis instead of storing them on your camera and/or memory card.

You are going to have to download a Windows 7 driver from Canon that will allow them to communicate.
Go to this page here (click here) and under the Drivers and Software, where it says "Choose your operating system", select Windows 7.

I'm trying to take a picture with my Canon super shot SD790 and the screen says my card is locked. How do I unlock my card?

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

How do i upload my video from my Canon PowerShot sd 790is camera on to my Sony Vaio laptop?

If you have your video stored on a memory card that is in your camera then get yourself a memory card reader. This will plug into your computer. Put the memory card into the reader and you should be able to copy & paste your video onto your computer. The card reader can be purchased fro about $20 from any store that sells cameras or similar items.
Hope this helps.

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:
