My back up 160GB Rugged drive quit working,felt hotter than normal and gives off a 'burnt' cct. smell.
MacBook Pro using XP pro SP3 with Firewire link. Backup size about 70GB with five years of photos.
LaCie Rugged 160GB drive. PN: TL204ZM/A SN:1186712181133QR. Purchased from Mac Store, June 2008.

One of the circuits in the back up drive failed. Your options are to send to to the manufacturer for possible repair or you can try removing the drive unit, that is actually what is inside that, and putting it in a portable case, available from Best Buy for about 39.99, and continue to use the device. or take it as a lose of data and get a new back up drive.
