First verify whether the Synaptics TouchPad software is installed by following the steps given below:
(i) Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize > Mouse Pointers . The Mouse Properties settings window will open.
Alternately, click Start and type Mouse in the Search field, and select Mouse when it becomes available in the program list. The Mouse Properties settings window will open.
(ii) Verify that the Device Settings tab is present in the Mouse Properties window.
(iii) If this tab is not present, you will need to obtain the Synaptics TouchPad software.

If you power on and see the HP bios boot screen, the HP symbol, then the screen goes black, try pushing the F10 or F12 keys when you power on and select boot in safe mode. If the computer boots and you can see everything, power down and see if it will boot correctly to regular Windows. If you can not boot to a screen that you can see in safe mode you have a much larger problem and need to get a technician to look at the laptop to find the problem.
