Why portable dryer heats but does not spin?

Open it up and check the belt inside. A belt is around the drum and around a pulley at the motor. If it is broken or has slipped off, then it wont spin.

Dryer will not spin. Its a propane dryer and the heat is fine...just wont spin. I assume there is a belt somewhere?

Belt is on the inside. It wraps around the motor pulley and the drum. Opening the dryer is required. Make sure unit is unpluged 1st. Very easy repair. Belt can be ordered online and shipped to you. Model and serial number will be required. Probably about a $15 - $30 repair. Should take about 30 -45 minutes on the long side. Instruction to open your dryer should be here: http://www.partselect.com/dryer+open-cabinet+repair.htm

My druer is heating but the drum wont spin

either the motor is defective or the drum belt is broken or off the pulleys, if you can't hear the motor start and run w/o belt attached and it just buzzes the motor start cap could be bad

Whirpool Washer LSQ9500LQ0 Won't Spin or Drain

Your belt assessment sounds correct on the dryer problem.
If you can, restore the lid switch connections, and operate the switch during what should be spin. You should be able to hear a relay or solenoid clicking off and on with the switch.

Whirlpool dryer WED5530SQ0, heats but does not run

So,. basically your drum doesnt turn. SO your getting heat still even though the drum isnt turning. Is this right? Sounds strange??? Do you hear any humming noise when you push the start button? I need to know a little more about the problem because im kinda confused as how you decribed the problem. Iv never seen a dryer heat but the drum not spinning. especially your model dryer. Its electric heat right? because if the drum doesnt spin, maybe your motor is bad. and if your motor is bad, then your heating element wont heat up because the centrifical switch in the motor is not switching to complete the circuit to the heating element. So this is why im confused when you said" Dryer heats when knob turned but when "push button" pressed, drum doesnt run." Because your belt wraps around the motor pully and the motor is what makes the drum turn. Like i said, i never seen this model dryer heat with out the motor operating. So if you can give me some more info, ill do my best to help you out....Thanks!!!!

My Neptune dry tub does not spin. I tried to spin it by hand and it was difficult. Can I repair this myself rather than have a repair man do it?

As you may imagine, a dryer is about the most simple household electric item there is. It is a gigantic tub that has a huge belt around it that attaches to an electric motor. The belt is rubber and subject to wear, as well as extreme heat caused by the whole process.

90% of the time its the belt, but unusually, your motor could be fried (which makes repair worthless). It's no wonder people make a living off of taking these units off the side of the road, replacing the belt for $20 and selling them on CL for $100.

You need to locate the model number and/or serial number for your unit. Also you need to open it up (which should be easy) and confirm the belt is mangled, and the motor spins fine. The belt could also just have jumped the track, and you can replace it. Replacing the belt is similar to putting a chain back on a bicycle. Usually if the belt jumps the track, it needs replacement anyway. Take the belt off/out of the way, and run the dryer to confirm the electric motor is running fine.

After that plug you model number and/or serial in google, with "replacement belt" and you should be able to find information on it.
