Question about Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 AT-X for Nikon

1 Answer

My Tokina AF Lens NEEDS HANDS-ON REPAIR (macro)

I purchased this lens in the 80's to use on my Minolta SLR 8000 film camera. Pulled it out of storage to use with my new Sony A700. It makes a noise when turning on the camera, and the AF does not work. In fact, when it is mounted on the camera, I cannot even manual focus. Does FixYa have an actual repair department? If not, where is best place to send to have repair? And is it worth it? It's all metal and was a great fast lens.

My lens is not the AT-X for Nikon, but I was forced to pick a valid product to ask for assistance, and my lens is not listed.

Thanks

A: Your local (specialist) camera shop should be able to look at that for you. But it could be that nothing is wrong and you would be wasting your time because:

B: Searching through other forums, it seems that Tokina's official stance is that it is not designed for digital cameras. eg www.dyxum.com/reviews/lenses/reviews.asp?IDLens=182

Unless you have a lens collimator and other equipment necessary to ensure proper alignment when reassembling the lens, don't do it yourself. Take it to a camera shop and have a properly trained and equipped professional do it.

Can i use tamron 90-300 mm af macro on my minolta 404 si dynax ?

Tamron makes lenses with a variety of lens mounts. If the lens has a Minolta mount then yes, you may use it with your camera.

Cameras compatible with Quantaray AF 70-300mm lens

Depending on how new your Minolta SLR film camera was, the lens may or may not work on a Minolta Digital SLR. In many cases, a lens with the correct mount (in this case, a Minolta mount) can be used on the same brand of camera in the digital format.

One thing you should know is that DSLR sensors are, generally speaking, smaller than the size of a 35mm film negative. Long story short, that means that your lens will have a magnification factor on the DSLR. Usually, it is in the range of 150%, so a 70-300 lens from a film camera would cover 105 to 450 on a Digital SLR.

To be sure about the mount, you'll need to seek advice specific to Minoltas -- probably best to take your lens to a local camera shop and see for sure if it fits and what features will work (aperature, auto-focus, etc) and which won't work on the DSLR.

Tokina f2.8 100mm macro nikon mount. setting apature and shutter speed. little manual with lens not very informative.

Turn the aperture ring to the smallest aperture (largest f/number) and lock it there. Set the aperture and shutter speed on the camera body. You didn't specify which camera you're using, so I'm afraid I can't give you details there.

You will find all the information in the camera manual, not the lens manual.

Minolta SLR Lens on Sony - Does it work.

As I understand it, Sony bought Minolta, lock, stock, and barrel. Theoretically the lenses should fit and may work on manual, but I'm very sure they will not totally work on sony digital cameras. I wouldn't even try to fit them as the autofocus system on the camera may be damaged.

Changing lens

Your Nikon is a SLR which stands for single lens reflex. The reflex part is the way the mirror that lets you look through the lens to frame the picture flips up to let the light go straight to the film. You can change the lens half way through the film roll because the mirror is down while you change the film and blocks light from getting to the film, just as it blocks the light until you push the shutter button. Have fun with your 'new' camera! I use an even older style Nikon FE2. I like my Nikon 55mm macro lens but your newer camera takes autofocus lenses so you'll need advice from someone else for that.

Sorry, the mounts of Minolta manual focus lenses are different than their auto focus series. Sigma, Tokina and Tamron all make compatible zoom lenses to fit the Maxxum series cameras
