Question about APC Back-UPS® CS 500 UPS System
These UPS's have a built-in feature which does a self-test of the battery status when you first turn it on. At this time, it will click over to battery power as if the power is off. If it detects that the battery is bad, it won't turn on. A brutal, but effective method to let the user know that the battery is not good anymore. The manufacturers don't want you to continue using the battery outlets with the false premise that you are "safe" from a power outage.
However, batteries are easy to replace and, considering the cost of a new UPS is around $65, a new battery for $20 is a quick easy fix. Here's the replacement battery for that APC BK500 (or CS 500): http://www.batteryinternational.com/apc-backups-bk500-ups-battery-ups-batteries-f2.html

How old is unit? UPS is a Battery that is charged from power outlet. It maintains voltage when computers are plug into it so fluctuations in current don't spike or wane.On a Power Failure the UPS supplies all the power by using the battery and an inverter. If your units batteries are not charging you need to replace them.In most cases it is not cost effective.Do some more test before you replace it.Good Luck.

All batteries, old or not really used hard should be replaced every three years. If not they turn to acid, or blister. If bllister does occur, throw the unit away, most likely the inverter will not last very long after the new batter is installed.
To know if your UPS is working right even if the battery might check out, use a volt meter to see if the battery is 12.5 to Volts. If you have a ceramic 10 ohm resister, you can alagator clip it across the + & - and it should hold the voltage above 12V DC, but if it sinks real quick below that...that battery is done.
To check to see if your UPS is OK. Plug it in use the volt meter to check the output voltage. Should be 115V-120V AC, unplug the plug from the wall socket and the readings should be hovering around 118V AC. That means your Inverter is still working. If the UPS dies, two things, go check the battery, or the inverter is toast-Throw away the Unit buy another. May I suggest that since CPU's are getting more advanced and faster and new computer power supplies are getting bigger go bigger on the UPS. Start out with a 1000VA or standardize on 1500VA. They really are not too expensive like they use to be.

If you want to have 1 Hour back up time with your symmetra 16KVA UPS what you need is to get one additional Symmetra XR Battery frame and a battery pack same as the battery pack installed on your existing Symmetra frame. for the runtime issue you need to compute if how many percent the load that you have right now. From there you will know how many battery packs you need to obtain the 1 hour back up time.

Turn it off and unplug it from the wall.
Open it up and make sure that the red and black wires are connected.
If they are the battery needs to be replaced. They are only good for 2-3 years. If you are not comfortable with my instructions, call APC for free support. (800) 555-2725
Vote for this solution if it helps.

It certainly indictes a problem with the APC unit a replacement bettry may or may not solve the problem. Do you really need one as you have an anti surge protector?

More than likely it is the battery. These units simply test the voltage during the self test, and, although not typical, the battery voltage could be good without a load, but fail with a load. 3 years is generally the life span of SLA batteries. Replacement batteries are fairly inexpensive and can be found at: http://batteryinternational.com/ups-batteries-apc-batteries.html
