i have changed the batteries on both devices and whenI press the bluetooth icon in the back they light.

I have taken the remorte from the usb and tried it in a different usb port - it did not work.

Is there a specific procedure to connect the keyboard and mouse to the system? Meaning is there a sequence of action between the keyboard and mouse? Do we need to press the bluetooth icons in the back? When?

Check the batteries in both devices and check to make sure you have not accidentally covered the transmitter/receiver device that is connected to the computer. To make sure the USB port you are using is functional try a different USB device in that port. If none of this solves your issue try un-installing and re-installing the devices or a different Transmit/Recieve device.

Yes, there is a sequence but you have to get that from the installation instructions. In most cases, once you have the USB part installed and recognized by the computer you have to turn on the keyboard and initiate the wireless connection by pressing a button on the keyboard and or the USB device. This initiates communications between the two devices.

Keyboard not responding

The keyboard has probably died. (It happens often). Here's a great inexpensive combo to replace your current one. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-MK270-Wireless-Keyboard-Mouse/dp/B00BP5KOPA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491364851&sr=8-1&keywords=Logitech-MK270-Wireless-Keyboard-Mouse

Keyboard not working...

Have you pressed the connect button on the bottom (or side) of the keyboard. Having the mouse working means that all the rest of the kit is working, (as the reciever can connect to the mouse) if the keyboard will not connect (after pressing connect a few times)it seems that you have a dud transmitter in the keyboard, This does happen unfortunately (the oscilator crystal fails) if within warrantee try to get it replaced. Hope this helps
