Question about Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

2 Answers

I own an 18" 42CC Poulan chainsaw. It's the kind Wal Mart sells. It's worked great for about five years. Today, the chainbrake stopped working. When I crank the saw, the chain runs. It was for no apparent reason. Is there an easy way to fix this?

Thanks a lot for all the help. I took it apart, and it looks like the spring on the clutch is broken. I ordered a new one and the tool to remove the clutch. Looks like I might have it solved soon. Thanks again.

I have another very quick question. I got the saw working great for a while, but now that C-clip that holds on the sprocket is missing. It's a long story, but I can't find it. Do you guys know the exact name of it?

5 years on a Poulan isn't bad. I think you are saying the chain rotates at idle. The idle may have crept up over the years, it can be tested and set to manufacturer's recommended speed by your friendly neighborhood chainsaw shop. There are springs on the centrifical clutch that occationally get tired, the same place can determine if that is your problem and replace them or show you where they are located so you can replace them. A good shop will be willing to help regardless of what they sell. HTH

A Poulan has an outboard clutch. Special tools and procedures must be employed to remove it. I recommend you not attempt it. You can see into the the clutch drum with the clutch cover removed, blowing it out with compressed air is worth a try. Please wear eye protection.

    You are correct fredy2;

It has an inboard clutch. I hate it when I'm wrong!

Be careful removing the Clip (eye protection may be a good idea, the clips tend to fly).

I think your model number is PP4218 (no guarantees), a clutch washer kit, Item 10, pn530071945, $3.42.

Whatever the model number it can be found here:

The centrifugal clutch is stuck. Probably has dirt in it.

Remove the chain, then remove the sprocket with the clutch drum from the shaft. You should see any problem in that area. Often there is a "C" clip to remove and then slide the drum off the shaft. ANY BROKEN PARTS SHOULD BE OBVIOUS. There may be a load of sawdust in there causing the problem.

When engine is running the clutch will not turn. What could the problem be?

Sounds silly but have to activated the chainbrake by accident.? The black handguard by the top handle is the chainbrake.! Pull it back to de-activate the safety chain brake. It works by activating a brake band around the clutch drum, stopping the drive but the engine still runs, however if you try and rev it the engine will struggle under load because the clutch is trying to drive a drum which is being held by the brake.

Chainsaw is new but chain will not move. Is there a safety feature causing this, or what is the problem?

All machines today will have a chainbrake, this is normally a band that comes around the clutch drum to stop the chain in the event of a kick back, to unlock the brake, pull the hand guard fully back to the top handle until you hear the click of the brake loading, there will be an amount of force required to pull the guard back.

I bought and registered my RCA surround system a few months ago and it has stopped working (Trips off). Sooooo, it no longer works. Is my warrenty still valid? Purchesed at wal mart, ser # LA 221JD160055...

Hi there,

Your warranty should still be valid, as long as you still have you receipt and your warranty card. A standard warranty on electronic products is usually between 1 and 3 years. Wal Mart will be able to tell you if the device is still under warranty.

Thank you for using Fixya! Have a great day and please remember to rate this solution.

Sir,
Poulan makes a several differant brands of chain saws and may have made this electric one. Try a search for Poulan chainsaws if no one else answers you question. Ask the poulan people about Remington electric saws they would surly know or get back to me here I'll have to have a few days to ask around but seems Ive seen this brand at wal mart.

Hi Christine,
The company that made these has gone out of business, so you cannot get a replacement. However, I have a used 702 which I can sell to you for $45+shipping. It has all the parts, in original box.
I also have a used PDV-705 (this model has a remote control, plus S-Video & more), which I will sell for $60+ shipping. Both have been thoroughly tested and all works great. I can email you photos. Email me at 1topwop@comcast.net
good luck and warm regards,
