Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I need instructions on how to clean the lens on a Panasonic DVD Recorder Model # DMR-EZ17. he manual says to use the DVD lens cleaner. We bought the unit two years ago and I don't know what the lens cleaner is or where to find the lens for that matter. Is the cleaner a soft cloth or a chemical? When playing a disc, the picture is extremely dark. Too dark to watch. Thanks for your help. Pat Robinson

Radio Shack ($13)
The lens cleaner is a CD "Audio" disc that has some imbedded brushes on one of the audio tracks.

Read the instructions carefully (no harm if it's not done right). Turn ON your speakers or listen to the CD/Cleaner through your headphones. There are no chemicals involved, and can be used several times.

The problem (darkness) may not go away.
It seems more like the voltage level on the DVD output or the TV input is too low.

If you have several things connected to the DVD, disconnect them, except the TV.
If you have other devices turned on that are connected to the TV, turn them OFF (like a VCR or another DVD player, etc).

Please "comment" back...

Hope this helps!

Insert a lens cleaning disc into it and let it play. If this do not help you, the optical pickup unit to your playder is faulty, and should be replaced.

Panasonic DVD recorder #DMR-EH65. It will accept a blank dvd then go into read,I can hear the lens assembly go back and fort several times, then it says disc error.Did the lens life expire?

Hello timmy: The recording process on the dvd recorder side is done is done by a seperate lens from the playback, so there could be something wrong with the writable side of the optical assembly, another thing to consider trying is the cleaning disc if you haven't tried this, another brand of blank disc and finally a firmware update is available from panasonic for the specific model you have, I don't know if you have updated it but here is the overall description: DMR-EH55 DVD Recorder Firmware Update
  • Version UP-317
  • Compatible Models DMR-EH55S
  • Issues Addressed Issues Addressed
    1. Corrects DVD Recorder hang-up or freezing during DVD playback caused by connection to Scientific Atlanta cable box model # 3250.
    2. Resolves U71 error message caused by HDMI connection to Philips TV.
    3. Improves DVD-Video playback of DVD+RW discs.
    4. Prevents DVD Recorder from turning on Panasonic TV's power by HDAVI control (EZ Sync) when connected with HDMI at completion of copying or finalizing.
    5. Resolves SET CLOCK MANUALLY tab being grayed out after a power failure.
I hope this is helpful and the update is available from panasonic.com, all you need is to type the model number in the search windows after you click the support option. Thanks!

DMR-EH55 DVD recorder is not able to read DVDs any more

You purchase a dry DVD lens cleaner and put it inside the tray. It will clean it for you. If you take apart the drive to expose the lens, you are actually at risk of making it worse.

Fuzzy Picture

Are you using the component (RGB) outputs, and a Sony TV? I believe that there is something in the output of at least some Panny DVD recorders (over the RGB component path), which Sony TVs don't process properly.

No picture

[I am assuming that the recorded disc was not made using the DVD recorder]. It's most likely that the video portion of the file is encoded in a format that is not supported by the DVD recorder. The player only supports DivX, JPEG, and MP3 formats. So try transferring the file on the disc to a computer and encoding in a supported format. You can use free online services such as http://media-convert.com/ or http://www.zamzar.com/ to encode media files into different formats.
