Fantom hard drive Flashing LED - Unreadable

I have a Fantom Drives TFD500C16. I use it for media storage. Today, I found it with a solid red illuminated LED. After powering it off and back on the LED flashes 9 red 1 blue 8 red 1 blue, suggesting it is signaling a problem possibly "98." The HDD is no longer readable and is not detected by any computer. After the flashing warning, the LED remains illuminated, my computer then gets a USB signal and tries to install some unknown driver which fails.

I use Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have use the Computer Management program for Disk Management but this HDD is not seen.

The warranty is expired. Is there anything that is a known problem and any solutions to getting it operating?

Hello,

As for known problems, this sounds like a failure in one of the circuit boards, either the one on the hard drive or the USB conversion board. If it is off warranty, the simplest method to test this is to transfer the drive into a new enclosure which you should be able to do at any PC shop.

If the drive works in the new drive enclosure then you're good to go. If it doesn't then you will likely need to replace it and if there is important data on the drive enlist a pro to recover the data.

Try the swap and let me know how you make out, if the results are indicating the need for a pro then reply with your Country, State and City and I will point you to an appropriate pro near you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Is this advice also good for a mac 500gb fantom drive? Mine also has a steady blue light, but won't mount or show up with software. I live in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The drive will not update itself automatically. You will have to download the firmware update and update it yourself. You may also want to get the latest Manager software that is Windows 7 compatible.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

I can not locate a driver for my Fantom Titanium II (TFD500C16) 500 GB USB Hard Drive. Do you know where?

Your device should not need drivers Fte Fantom/Titanium drives are fully supported by both Windows and Mac OS's.
Try replacing the cable or using a different USB port.
Sorry I cannot be of more help, The drive itself may be damaged, You can test this by physically removing the drive itself from the case and installing it internally to your system....If the drive functions properly, then the problem is within the board inside the casing.

My Fantom II Hard drive only has a red light on

Sounds like the drive has gone faulty, all you can do is take drive out of case, get USB to HDD - USB "Dongle" and hook up HDD, and see if it works on PC & USB, If YES, then Case and interface are faulty, otherwise the HDD is faulty.

Same thing

if its making a loud clicking noise i would guess that the hard drive got jolted hard while shipping if possible send it back and get another one or if you have another hard drive put it in install windows and discard other drive very rare for them to get damaged during shipping(maybe you can get them to just send hd(hard drive)and drivers instead of whole computer!!!

Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.

Drive Not Ready

Sounds like the enclosure is failing, the drive has bad sector/blocks or there may have been a breif dip in power which has effected the opration, locking up the drive and the computer while it was attached. Hope this helps.
