Question about Maytag Washing Machines

1 Answer

The washer will not fill when the temperature is set to cold. However, the washer will fill if the timer is advanced to rinse (which is always cold). This occurs for both regular and delicate cycles. Is this the timer or the temperature selector switch??

Well maybe yes and maybe no. The timer works for the hot and warm cycles and therefore would seem to be sending power to the selector switch. Is there a separate circuit for each cycle?? I guess what I need is a wiring diagram and maybe, just maybe there is a schematic inside the control panel -- I have not opened that up yet. Heck, I think I can just hot wire to the cold water solenoid and by pass the timer/selector with a toggle switch to allow for a cold water wash. What my wife is now doing is filling the machine on the rinse position with cold water and then dialing in the actual wash cycle she wants to use.
I still wonder if it isn't the temperature selector switch that has "burned" points otherwise why would the Hot and Warm options work.

    Hiltonjug,

Thanks for the comment. I did find the schematic diagram and found that the temperature switch was not closing when placed in the cold cycle position. I then used a jumper wire to bypass the temperature switch and the machine filled with cold water and functioned normally. So the problem was in fact the temperature selector switch.

    Thanks anyway, John

It's going to be your timer. It has points inside. The point the sends power to your selector switch at the beginning of the cycle is burned.

First, please keep in mind that I'm attempting to diagnose your piece of equipment without even being there and with very little information. Most of the time, not even a model number. Due to this, some times we can only give an educated guess and It seems some do not take this in consideration when rating our solution.

The timer has points that send power to the temp switch. If the timer does not send the power or allow the option, it makes no difference what the selector is set on. The selector works only when the timer allows you an option. Just like you can't rinse in hot. The timer does not allow the option by sending no power to the selector for hot. If you have not opened the console, it will have a wire diagram. Then you will see what I'm saying. May be then i'll get a better rating.

My wahser just stopped working it filled with water and then started agitating and then all the sudden stopped please help

When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water

    Cycle does not advance?

it sounds to me like its a water pump problem i think you will find your water pump is not working. if the washer cant drain all its water it will not advance further than that as the machine must detect that all the water has been pumped out before it will start to spin. thus protecting the agitator from snapping.

    Stops during rinse cycle

    Dear customer,

We recommend the following when a washer's cycles dont advance..
    1. If the washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer does not advance, the timer probably needs to be replaced
    2. If the timer does not advance while the washer is in a spin cycle, the timer probably needs to be replaced
    3. If the timer does not advance during the rinse cycle, check whether water has filled the tub, if not, it is likely cold water related. Check the cold water supply valve, check the supply hose for kinks, check the filter screen and check the water inlet valve
For details on how to self test these parts plz refer to http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/washer/washer.php
Plz rate this solution.. thank you..

Whirlpool Washer will not progress to the rince cycle.

that is either a problem with the timer , or with the cold water hose at the back of the machine, see the following:

    70 series Kenmore washer

POWERUP, YOUR WASHER COULD BE THE LID SWITCH OR THE COLD WATER VALVE. AT THE END OF THE WASH CYCLE, THE MOTOR WILL SPIN OUT THE WATER, BUT ONLY IF THE LID SWITCH IS ACTUATED. IF THE SWITCH IS BAD, IT WILL NOT SPIN OUT THE WATER AND THE TIMER WILL NOT ADVANCE FROM THAT POINT.
IF THE WASHER SPINS, THE NEXT STEP IS TO FILL WITH WATER FOR THE RINSE CYCLE. MOST WASHERS USE COLD WATER FOR RINSES. IF THE COLD WATER VALVE IS RESTRICTED OR FAULTY, THE WASHER WON'T FILL. IF THE WASHER WON'T FILL, THE WATER LEVEL SWITCH WON'T ACTIVATE AND THE TIMER WON'T ADVANCE TO THE NEXT STEP.
