Question about Freezers

2 Answers

What are your thoughts on picking up a refrigerator versus having it delivered? I have the helpers I need to pick it up myself, and I have a trailer. My only concern is that the trailer is a bit ''bouncy''. The freezer weights about 170, so the bouncing will be fairly subdued versus an empty trailer...but it'll still do a bit of bouncing. I can adequately secure the freezer (a Frigidaire 13.7 cu ft upright), but I do worry about any internal damage that could result from bouncing. Self-pickup will save me about $75. It's worth my trouble to pick it up to save $75, but not if there's a high risk of damage.

    Hey, petemac1...

Your response indicates that it is a "clarification request", but I can't tell what it is you would like me to clarify. Please explain if there's something else you are looking for.

In response to your comments, that's a good suggestion to inquire about voiding the warranty by doing self-pickup, and I will do that. Reading between the lines of your response, I think you are saying that the only real risk is cosmetic, and nothing more. Am I reading you right on that front?

If you use moving blankets an appliance dolly and the help is careful you should be ok. If the store delivers and it gets a ding. You just send it back but if your friends help you are on your own. I would make sure putting it in your self does not void any warranty.

Clarification: Just be careful. If you damage the appliance during the move it would probably not be covered and if there was a problem with the appliance and you needed it replaced then you may have to take the first one back and get the replacement.. My daughter had it delivered and there was a ding so back it went. The next one had a different problem and it went back as well. The third one had problems with the doors. A real hassle but the fourth one was perfect. If she had picked it up they would have most likely blamed her. Hope this helps.

It's like having some one pick up your wife to be. Pick it up yourself, this way you have the opportunity to check the merchandise over befoere taking it home. Plus you save yourself $75. Use padding and pick you up a stablizer bar at any hardware or Harbor Freight. You still save $60 with the bar and padding.

What is the odd chemical smell my freezer fan is blowing?

If the fan wont stop then it could be the motor on the unit that is overheating. The other thing would be the defrost coil.

Why does my camper freezer have rust all over?

Probably condensation building up inside from running hot, cleaning out the coils with one of them dusters or vacuuming the coils (underneath the unit on some models or on the back of some models of refrigerators and/or freezers helps them to run cooler and to avoid that rust. With our pets I have to clean our freezers coil every 2 or 3 months.

Try going further than defrost and draining the hose. There is gunk that builds up and you need to clean that out. Use a pipe cleaner(the fuzzy wires used mostly for art projects. They actually can clean pipes and water lines!!) Also, you can pick up a pack of pellets used for breaking down the "gunk" build up.

Can you freeze cheese

Yes and no.
Pick a cream cheese that is medium to high in fat and you can freeze it. It will alter the texture slightly but the taste remains the same. When thawed the cheese will be more crumbly than creamy, but still ok for eating as is, or even better for casseroles and dips etc.
Pick a cream cheese that is high in fatjjj Low and non-fat cream cheeses will not freeze very well.
Although it's completely possible to freeze cream cheese, it does alter the texture. Thawed cream cheese is less creamy and a lot more crumbly than fresh cream cheese. Because of this, it's best to use frozen cream cheese in casseroles, baked dishes and dips.
Pick a cream cheese that has a higher fat content. Low and non-fat cream cheeses don't freeze as well

Refrigerator not cold

My father was an expert refrigeration man for over 50years so i picked up a few tips. Change your Thermostat/take it of your fridge carefully drawing a diagram of where the wires and conecters are. Take the themostate to a domestic applience shop. Then fit it as your diagam tells you .Not the instructions in the box to complicated ? this will save you 80-90 pound.

Picked up used chest freezer...plugged in and briefly clicks...I can hear it energized for about 5 seconds then then repeats this cycle. It was on its side when delivered

Try to replace the compressor relay (most of the times problem) ,but if still doing the same clicking noise , the problem is in the compressor.

Can I convert an existing refrigerator to a freezer ?

It's do-able but really not worth the money it would take to do it. You would most likely have to change out the entire refrigeration system (compressor, evap., and expansion device.) Then you would have to add some sort of defrost timing device and defrost heaters. This woud include an defrost terminator and fan delay device as well. Way too much work and money to get what you want.
I would try to shop around too see if you can pick up a good used one from a reliable source.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Changing Freezers

If your products are already in the frozen state the answer is yes, you can make an immediate transfer. Normally a couple of hours run to allow the temperatures to stabilize is sufficient. The cool down run time also insures the the unit is functioning properly. If you plug it in and transfer the products right away make frequent checks to insure proper operation.
