Question about Light Outboard Motor Boat Bass Fishing Saltwater Base

Skipping, lack of power, 4 stroke mercruiser

My 90 hp 4 stroke outboard is skipping, and doesn't get up the RPM's it has a definite lack of power. At full throttle it will go about 10 MPH, but after a while I can maybe get it up to 20 - 25 MPH. any suggestions?

Has your boat been sitting more than 60 days. ethanol gas has been proven to only stay stable for 30 days in 90 degree + weather. Labor cost can be up to $100.00 per hour. CHEAP TEST- compression, spark, and fuel. TOOLS(1) A compression gauge (2) a spark gap tester.(3) A Clymer service manual for your engine. (you can purchase from your local dealer). I know all these are expensive but if your going to be a outboard owner you will always need them. TROUBLESHOOTING (1) check compression. without the year model I'm giving you a average numbers. Look at your Clymer manual for specific numbers. all cylinders need to be over 100 lbs and equal each other within 5 lbs.(2) check spark. use a spark gap tester all cylinders should jump a half inch gap. if you have good compression and good spark, fuel is the problem nine times out of ten. Drain gas tank,clean fuel lines replace primer bulb and replace all fuel filters. Finally replace spark plugs, I know spark plugs probably don't look bad but this is a outboard. Fresh spark plugs means less resistance for the ignition system. The ignition system is week compared to automotive. Test drive boat, if the problem is still there then there is further steps to take. Again I don't know the year model so I guessing its fuel injected. Pull out your clymer manual. what is great about the Clymer Manual for Novice techs is it gives detailed info on your outboard. Troubleshooting tips and teaches you how your outboard works.

If you drop the first zero it would put it at 1981.

this site gives a different answer, as 1980- 81, so close. It SUGGESTS it is a 4 stroke engine.

It is likely a 4 stroke, but I won't give you a definitive answer, due to the damage it can cause with a guess!

A four stroke running with two stroke oil will just smoke, but a two stroke with no oil will seize and leave you stranded on the water with a seized engine!

A four stroke engine has valves operated by push rods or a pulley and a chain, a two stroke just has a head. Take a look at the engine and it should be obvious.

For your first service, I would suggest you go to a marine engineer. Ask all the questions, and get the right answers. When I had my 1986 Evinrude serviced, i typed a list of questions and left the list with him. i asked him when I picked up the boat and wrote the answers down. The first one was 'petrol to oil ratio and which is the best oil'. A basic service will cost you a hundred bucks and you will have some comfort that you are unlikely to break down, 6 miles offshore with only a paddle :)

50:1 But if your doing mostly low rpm cruising (trolling) then you could reduce that a bit to 75:1 to help reduce smoke. If you do mostly mid to higher rpm cruising, then 50:1 (1 pint to 6 gallons. )
Or 200mls in 20 liters if your Canadian.

Are the controls for a 1998 15 HP 2 stroke Mercury outboard compatible with a 2011 30 HP 4 stroke Mercury outboard


If your old engine/control has the same 'options' as the30hp, yes everything is compatible... (Electric start or trim )
The throttle and shift cables are allways compatible...

To get the year of Johnson and Evinrude outboards use the word "INTRODUCES". Each letter corresponds to "1234567890" respectfully. It's best to check with a model year reference book, but this motor's model number contains "CC" which would indicate it's a '88.
