It is impossible not to have compression sometimes. compression is the product of the pistons coming up with the valves closed. Either it is there or it is not, it can't alternate between the two as compression loss would mean the presence of a major permanent mechanical failure. Likely you have an intermittent spark loss or fuel is not entering the engine (or both). You will need to do testing to determine which condition you have, or have a competent shop do that diagnostic work for you..

Hav u used a compression tester on the vehicle-must read values to confirm--it may be other things that appear to be the problem-if there is a low reading then rings/valves/oilpress or heads are of concern

1990 bmw 3 series not starting,i purchased a 316i bmw 1990 model with an m40 motor which was runnin then parked of for 6months.now wen i try starting the car it swings but doest start,it has...

If an engine has timing, compression, the right amount of fuel entering the combustion chamber and an adequate spark it must start and run.

The fact it doesn't start and run means at least one of those requirements is absent. Perhaps fuel is stale, not reaching the combustion chamber or maybe there is too much fuel.

A quick check of the spark and ignition can be made by cranking the engine and using an ether spray into the intake. If the engine briefly runs it can be assumed the ignition is good enough and the problem is fuel related.

02 saturn car starts then shuts off within 5 sec put new computer in it cause of step daughter hooking jumper cables up backwards. any ideas. have put on scanner and only found evap codes.

Check security light, if it is flashing , it is set. try this, turn ignition on, don't try to start, let set for ten minutes on. turn off don't take the key out. do this three times ten minutes each, after the third time turn it off, then try to start. This resets the security. If this does not work, then it needs reprogrammed to the new computer you installed. dealer only, about $100.00

My 1995 bmw wont start!

I don't think a 1995 3 series has a timing belt. 100% sure if its the inline 6 cylinder.bmw only used timing belts on two engines. (never replaced one) I would first start with a fuel pressure check to start your diagnosis. From there i'd check to see if you are getting spark and maybe even see if your plugs are fouled. If you have fuel pressure and spark, i'd suspect bad gas.(especially if the problem occured soon after filling up). It may be a good idea to do a compression check if you found no fault with the vehicle.

BMW E46 fault code P2799 - what does it mean

If is for a 3 series compact (318ti most common) then
P2799 is the intake air tem sensor 2
Which would explain the high idleing. Probably a sensor problem (bmw will charge) a competant mechanic should do it easily.
