Question about KitchenAid Refrigerators

1 Answer

I HAVE NO MANUALS FOR THIS PUPPY SO . . . I DEFROSTED THE LIL' FREEZER. AFTER I DID THAT, IT NEVER SEEMED TO COOL ANYWHERE IN THE FRIG. WATER IS ALL OVER THE LIL' FREEZER COMPARTMENT. I UNPLUGGED, REPLUGGED TURNED THERMASTST TO 7, I HERE IT RUNNING, BUT SEE NO COOLING. I HOPE THIS IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION. IT'S ALL MY SON AND I HAVE TO HOLD OUR GOODS.

Sir capt2duck: Thank you for a quick response. You're a good man.

Can you steer me where I can find that refrigerant line?

I didn't use a sharp object in the defrost, but I did use a spatula, and a meat hammer (flat ended) to break the pieces that were loose.

I can't honestly say if it runs continuously, or if it shuts off. I have it in a walk in closet off my bedroom. I can't hear it, when i did check on it, I didn't notice or pay attention to that on/off. All i can say truthfully is that i checked and there was no cooling. Ice did start to form in the back of the freezer where the wires are. Dead center back freezer. When I jiggle around back there, i can hear a more progressive sound.

Man, this is a "BIG" bummer.

I respect and appreciate greatly all your information. I'm not doubting your post. I'm just freakin on the frig. -pattip

capt2duck, on that lil mcbr440w frig, when i initially tried to turn the thermostat on, it din't click, or catch from off to 7 at all. there is that lil button in the center, i pushed that sucker in and out several times. Also, it just kept falling off. I put it back on, and screwed it into that therostat until it was flushed (almost) to the main thermostat regulator.

Could I have jacked it up that way? :-( I'm sorry, but I need to make sure. It's never a goodtime for appliance deaths, but as everyone else, it really really really isn't a goodtime to divorce my lil' frig. Can you dig that ;./

Sounds like when you defrosted it you used something sharp and punctured the refrigerant line somewhere. Does it run constantly? never gets any cooling? never shuts off? all symptoms of no freon in sealed refrigerant system. I'd be looking for a replacement.

Let's Try turning the defrost timer clockwise slowly. 67001036 Defrost Timer The defrost timer is item location 12 in this photo HERE and there should be a hole with a plastic plug covering the hole that you place the screwdriver through. Turn timer with a flat head screwdriver slowly until the compressor and fans stop. With fans and compressor stopped for up to 30 minutes the defrost heater should come on. If doing this causes the defrost to take place simply replace the defrost timer. If not then please let me know and I will instruct you on how to change the=> 67001794 Defrost Heater Assembly and the 12001937 Defrost Thermostat Thanks Sea Breeze

Unplugged frig overnite once I plugged back in made a gurgeling sound whenever I opened the door what would that be?

Usually that is caused by a bad defrost heater thermostat or defrost timer. Failure to automatically defrost is the cause of freezing up.
If you don't feel up to doing the work yourself you should have an appliance repair shop look at it.

The gurgling is caused by water in the catch pan under the fridge. When you defrosted it some of the water made it into the drip pan (and maybe overflowed onto the floor). The fan inside the compressor area under and behind the freezer may be splashing in the excess water in the drip pan. This by itself is not a real problem since it is designed to automatically evaporate the water drained during automatic defrosting, but the excess water and potential overflow onto the floor can become a problem.

Should I just junk this frig? We turned frig off manual defrosted and cleaned out plugged up line from freezer to frig. Frig and freezer worked fine for one month and then the same problem has happened...

Hi this probably has a bad defrost thermostat, its only a $10-15 part its located in the freezer behind the rear panel. Would need to be totally defrosted beore you changed it and usually requires a bit of wiring but nothing complicated just need to be handy with wire strippers.

MAGIC CHEF mcbr440w not cooling

what i hear bad about it is that then you bang it with the hammer, it might have domaged the evaporator coil and what you have now is a refrigerant leak, it may be the reason of frost. I recall have you cheked to make sure the fan is blowing air?

Maytag French Door MFD2561HEB water dispenser not working

We had the same issues with the water freezing and called a technician out. He added some extra insulation installed around the water lines inside the refrigerator and we also keep our frig at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, slightly above the manufacturers default setting. Hope this helps.

Frig will not cool

I had a similar problem. One thing that I need to know is is it cooling at all? If everything is operating, but no cooling occurs, you may have a bad board. This controls all of the components. Getting it replaced could be pretty pricey. Good luck, and please rate.

Freezer stops freezing food - frig stays cool

Possibly sounds like the heating element on your defroster is burnt out or the drain hole for the defroster is blocked, not allowing the defrosted water to drip underneath the fridge to evaporate, thus causing a buildup of ice. That buildup may be blocking that vent that goes bwtn the freezer and fridge. The heating element is simply checked and/or replaced by removing back panel of freezer. It's about the only thing behind that panel and likes like a row of fins. Google images for a better understanding of what you are looking at. If its a block of ice, you know there is a problem. The element is replaced by simply unplugging it and replacing with a new one. You should also see a small hole at the bottom of the freezer. Try pouring a little water in it and listen to see it its running into the plastic pan that's underneath the fridge (usually visible if you take the grill off). Some models have a hose that kinks up attached to this small hole. Had an Amana freezer that did this on several occasions and cause the whole bottom of the freezer to become a block of ice because the water had no where to go.

cleaning the condensor is nothing to do with evaporator freezing up. keep an eye on it - you may have a problem with the defrost cycle. problem can also happen if freezer door has been left open
