Non bootable hard disc

At boot up I get a black screen with non bootrable device at the top of it.

I have tried booting from cd with ubuntu (linux) and the drive says it is not mountable. I have also tried plugging into another PC via a usb cable and it says no partitions found. I need to try and recover some data, what should I do?

Someone may know a free utility; however,
"Partition Commander" (any version) by vcom may recover it for you. Versions 8, 9 & 10 worked wonders when I used them from recovery and other disk/partition tasks.

Hope this helps!

My pc wont boot. All i get is " reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

This can happen if you have non-bootable media in the default boot device (i.e., you have a CD in the CD/DVD drive and that drive is listed as the default boot device in your system's BIOS). More often (on newer systems), a failed hard drive will also produce this message.

If you have bootable media (the Windows install CD is one example), you should try to boot to it and see if you can read your hard drive.

Hello there.

Nice to see more people trying out Linux :-)

From your description it sounds like the CD image you downloaded is not bootable. What i would do is scrap that CD and try the following, this is a guide that explains step by step how to take the downloaded .ISO file and burn it to CD, so that the computer can boot from it (known as a bootable CD).

Please click here for the information.

As Ubuntu has a partition program as part of the installer, you can use this to resize your Windows partition and install Ubuntu in the free partition left over.

This should get you setup in no time :)

Hope this helps.

My FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO PA 1538 screen comes black ? HELP

Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor and see if all is working Ok with that, if it is, then you may need to get the laptop display serviced - if it does the same on the external display, then try booting the laptop from a CD or DVD such as an OS install CD (Windows or Linux) or a boot utility CD such as Hiren's Boot CD - this will allow you to test whether the problem lays with your installed operating system or with the hardware. . . .
Note: do not go any further than the initial displays if using an OS install CD unless you are using a Linux Live boot CD which will not destroy your installed operating system. . . .See http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ to download a copy of Hiren's Boot CD to burn to a CD. . . .See http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download to download a copy of a Ubuntu (Linux) Live CD.

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable CD-ROM. First verify that no CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a CD.

1 Remove any floppy disks or bootable CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives or other bootable media from the computer. Attempt to restart the computer again. Proceed if you continue to receive the error.
2 Restart the computer again. Press the key required to enter your BIOS setup. (The monitor usually displays a "Press [key] to access BIOS" right after restarting your computer. Press the key shown on your screen.)
3 Navigate to the "Boot Options" or "Advanced" menu by using the arrow keys. (The precise menu terms will vary according to your computer and BIOS type.)
4 Select the hard disk that contains your operating system (usually C:) as your primary boot device. Select your CD/DVD drive, your floppy drive or another hard disk as your secondary boot device.
5 Save and exit the BIOS. Proceed with the next step if you see the "Non-system disk error" message again.
6 Restart the computer. Return to the BIOS' "Boot Options" screen by following the steps above, then set the "CD/DVD drive" as the primary boot device and the hard disk as the secondary boot device. Save and exit the BIOS.
7 Insert your Windows installation disc. Restart the computer. Press any key to boot from disc. Follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall Windows.
8 Replace your hard disk drive if you cannot install Windows.

I got a message that reads Non-System disc or disc error replace and strike any key when ready. What do I do?

Hi,

Here the reason why youre getting the error message

Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.

Change your computer's boot sequence in you Bios. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.

If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) on the drive.

Thanks for using Fixya

My e-machine w3410 gives me a disk boot error insert disk and hit enter what does that mean

You probably have a non-bootable disc in the CD drive - when the computer powers up, your BIOS's first boot device is probably the CD drive and since it has a non-bootable disc in it, it can't boot. Remove the disc and re-boot your computer.

Can someone please help me.I cnt get my laptop to boot. When it starts it goes directly to a screen that says start up repair.then it says it cant fix the problem and turns off

It seems the boot program on your hard disk has messed up. Did you try to boot with a CD come with the laptop and do a repair? Or you can restore it to the factory default by pressing a key during booting up. It should be on the manual about the steps of booting up for factory default system restore. I would recommended you to boot with a bootable flash drive or a CD to back up your files. Those bootable flash drive or CD can be bought or made with some operating system. (Most of time Linux). Here is some links to show you how to make USB bootable drives.
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5490289.html
http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

You will need to change BIOS settings to boot with USB device first, there might be several USB device there you can choose the non mass storage ones if not sure which one to boot with first. But anyway it will try all of them so put your hard disk to the bottom. After booting and you can access the files on your hard disk, you will be able to move them to your USB device. Then restore it to factory default. If it still halts, then maybe the hard disk is not working properly, I will check it for you with more information like the beeps or other symptoms and the detailed model number of your computer. Or you may contact the reseller or manufacturer.

My laptop wont start up, It says "system disc or non system disc error, replace and press any key.." why? :(

you have it set to boot from cd so when you startup the computer it attempts to read the cd and than boot an operating system for you either remove the disk or enter your bios menu and set your boot order to negate the cd drive
