    Thanks for the reply Gort.
What I actually want to do however is restore the computer to its factory settings and as far as I know I think I need a recovery disk. Do I?

Dell didn't create a recovery partition on your computer back than, if that's what you're asking. My 2300 came with a Dell recovery cd. You might be able to get one from Dell.
Or you can create a slipstreamed sp3 installation cd if you need to reinstall the OS and you have the Windows discs. You can get the original driver files from the Dell website.
But why are you trying to restore it? Have you got some malware on the system, or what?
By pressing F8 at startup, you get the advanced startup options screen, which allows you to boot into last known good configuration.
If that doesn't work, you could try starting in safe mode, and then use the system restore command from Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore to restore the system back to a previous date when it was working.
Give us a few more details about your situation and we'll be happy to help you sort it out...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Is that what you really want to do?
That's drastic.

If you just need to "go back" to a different point, then:
1. Start computer and press F8 before Windows starts loading. This will put you in the Windows start menu.
2. Select start in "previously known good configuration"

Yes, there is a recovery CD; but Dell does not make that available after the computer is sold.

    You will have to try to obtain a "Reinstallation CD" from someone;

however, your own OS key will be needed. The key may be printed on the Dell sticker on the outside of the computer case.

The resinstallation CD is simply the OS (XP, perhaps)

Also, copy the C:\DELL\DRIVERS folder so that you will have the drivers for the computer's hardware.

If you don't have access to the folder, then remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer as a second hard drive and copy from there.

Not sure if this is enough info for you. Recovery is kind of drastic.

You should start it with the DVD that came with it, containing the clean installation of operating system. Or, if there is recovery partition created, you can install it from there by pressin ctrl + F11 simultaniously when starting the computer.

Dell computer system restore control F11

Dells do not have the 'control' F11 function to recover the OS, you need to boot it from a 'recovery CD', if you do not have one, go to dell.com and you can ask for a copy, they will ask you for the service tag of your computer (have it handly).

Hi,
You should be able to restore the system from the recovery partition on that model laptop.
Shut down the system. Then start it up. Right after pushing the power button to start it, hold down the CTRL and keep tapping the F11 key(for XP). If you have Vista just tap on F8(no need to hold down CTRL). A symantec recovery application (PC Restore) window will start up. just follow the instructions on the window.

Regards.

RESPONSE TO HANK

The drivers you need for your system can be downloaded here:

Your computer has a recovery partition which is hidden. If you needed to restore your computer you would access this recovery program by pressing CTRL +F11. This option would restore you computer to factory specs with all drivers for the orginal hardware.

Hope this helps.
