Question about Heating & Cooling

Compressor often doesn't come on

I have a Friederich Challenger, model KS10G10D, S/N 88CS01355. Bought it in August, 2001. Sometimes only the fan comes on, no matter where the temperature is set. Today, after several minutes waiting, I "clicked" the temperature setting many times, to maybe clean the contacts and get the compressor to come on. I gave up, and left the fan running. A couple hours later, the compressor came on and has been cycling ever since. Is there something I can do next time?

Sometime with old compressors it takes timke to get started if the weather too hbot outside. the unit is too old and next time try to hit the comp. few times if you do not have test unit. with hammer and see if it will work if it does you need to replace it.

I have a GE refrigerator (model GBS20HBSAWW) and the original fan for the compressor coil wasn't working. So I bought a new fan, put it in, and it still doesn't work. I have 12V coming out bet

White to red should read 12Vdc. Since you read the correct voltage and used white as the reference, you have your neutral. This can only mean that the manufacturer has shipped out a bad new part. Re-order and send the other back for exchange or or order it here.

GE Profile - model PDS20SBSALSS - constant clicking noise

The clicking is the compressor trying to start. If the compressor is extremely hot, try allowing it to cool. The condenser fan should run even if the compressor is out on overload; that may be the cause of the compressor failure. Check the supply to the fan and replace it if it doesn't run.If the compressor has been overheating for some time, it may be damaged and also need replacing.

Compressor comes on for about 1 minute, but fan doesn't. Then a sound like a pressure release valve opening starts and will continue until you turn the unit off. The unit will sometimes work normally...

The sound is from the compressor high side pressure exceeding design limits due to the fan not operating, the fan pulls air across the coil to remove heat from the freon which keeps the pressure down. The capacitor or fan motor may be bad. Need to open unit panel and visually inspect the capacitor for swelling, (rounded top should be flat) where the wires connect. Also use meter to test mfd of capacitor. May only need capacitor replacement, most common failure on this unit.
If not corrected damage can be done to the compressor due to overheating.

Freezer fan now working

OK then you make sure it's unpluged so the compressor will not overcooled and damage will happen to compressor. If you can tell me the model number I could help you. We will call this a solution if you can get the model number and even if you don;t you may need to find out whuy the fan does not work. Sometimes they are bad and sometimes part of a control system is not letting the fan run. What I mean about the compressor getting too cold is true. The fan takes the heat from inside the refrigerator out if the fan inside does not work the freon returning to the compressor is abot minus 20 degrees and too difficult for the compressor pump.

2001 Jetta 1.8 turbo - a/c intermitently goes warm during idle, and sometimes hear a loud vibration that comes on at off, all during idle.

its prob the cooling fan its located in a housing along with the radiator fan at the front of your engine bay look down when you open the hood . and make sure the fan is spinning run the ac on high and wait ( do this while the car is running of course ) . do not run your ac if the fan isnt working . you will burn up the compressor . the noise and vibrations you feel are from the compressor turning on and off.
now if the fan is working its prob the compressor. if all else fails take it to a mech where they can test it ... its not pricey and its quick

Not cooling

Sometimes when the evaporator fan goes out, it takes part of the motherboard also. (part number WR55X10552, which also subs into a WR55X10656) If this is the case, I would not expect the refrig to be running either. (If your compressor still runs, check door switch.)
