They vary by manufacturer. However, the basic design is a primary cable the goes from the winch through a track to the rear of the unit. The cable has a plug and a push plate in the middle and another at the end. It goes through a pully back into a track toward the front of the unit. The track is a metal, rectangular piece that runs from front to back down the center of the trailer. From the front and rear of the track there will be a total of four pipes, two from the front and two from the rear. The pipe will curve, one toward each corner and will again curve up into each corner of the unit. Inside each pipe is a heavy metal spring that when properly pushed by the main cable will push the roof up. The other system is the older system that has more cables to lift the roof instead of the push springs. 82c3e9f5-fa06-488f-8aa2-a3d032732f8c.jpg 84b8c690-0c1c-41da-88e3-cc691b42bf5b.jpg

I have a water leak in the back of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 ltd 2000, wet carpet with water going in to the spare wheel compartment

Hi Wayne,

I checked for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for your vehicle to see if there are any "known" problems with water leaks. The only bulletin I found was about the sunroof (if equipped) leaking into the passenger compartment.

Since there are no known problems for leaks in the rear, you will just have to do some diagnosis. Water leaks can be very evasive. They can originate in one place and accumulate water in another place. Here are some tips:

First, check the seals around your rear door and window. If there are any cuts or damage to the seals, this is most likely your problem.

You may need to remove the inner trim pieces from both the door and from the vehicle sides. Then run a hose over the top of the vehicle and over the rear door to see if you can see any water running on the inside. Be sure and look for water coming down from the roof area. Sometimes the mouldings and sealing material along the roof seams will leak. If this is the case, it will run down the inside wall and end up in the spare tire well. If you cannot find it this way, it may be necessary to remove the seats and ALL the inside trim so the headliner can be removed. I have seen roof leaks that are originating near the front that follow the roof reinforcement channel all the way to the rear. There are holes in the roof reinforcement chanel where you can look inside with a mirror and a flashlight (the headliner must be removed for this).

Another likely place for a leak is along the sides of the roof where the roof racks attach (if your Jeep is equipped with them).

If you find a leak in one of the seams, it is best to repair it with some (water-based) tub and tile caulk or (oil or water-based) plumber's dope. It is not recommended that you use silicone based RTV sealer because this contains acids that can cause the sheet metal to corrode and you will end-up with a worse problem in the long run.

I hope this helps you to get it figured out.

Carpets are wet in foot wells after all the frosty weather, and not just when it rains. Any solutions?

Have you been adding any coolant? You could have a leaking heater core, which will usually leak to the inside, wetting the carpets in the well. Most American cars locate the heater core on the passenger side of the firewall, so a leak will typically show up on only the passenger side floor. I once had an Audi that had the heater core mounted just about dead center on the firewall. When it started leaking, both sides of the well(s) got wet.

After it rains we have noticed that the rear passenger side floor well gets very wet, sometimes standing water. What could cause this?

water leak at the roof ditch moulding, the rear window seal, or the moon roof drains being plugged.

Does it do it without moving the car? Could be water splash in the wheel well through a sealer skip in a seam.

Facing up hill or down hill or both?

Lift up seat cushion and lift carpet and follow water stain path to source.

I have a leak and it does not seem to the be the new gasket

They say you should only compress the gasket to approximately 1/2 it's original thickness, and sometimes there are tabs that touch roof to tell you that's far enough. If your sure it's coming in around gasket where it meets roof, try loosening bolts off to allow you to lift upper unit off roof enough to use a caulking gun with a tube of "dicor" self leveling sealant, and run a bead of Dicor around where gasket meets roof , then set unit back down, & tighten until gasket is about 1/2 thickness as new.I always find it better to remove bolts & flip unit on it's side and get good bead down center of where gasket meets roof, then set unit back down, line it up & snug it down.Let it sit for a while to set a bit. Be ready with a rag to catch or wipe any excess that squeezes out from under gasket to the inside, that may end up on floor below, as it's very hard to remove that stuff after the fact.Has worked for me in similar situations.

2004 Expedition Sun Roof Leaks

you have 2 drains in the front that go down the a pillars and dump near the fenders.

The rear usually go down the B pillar or C pillar and out thebottom near the rocker panel.

Blow them out from the top with compressed air and make sure you have air flow at the exits.. Open the roof to see drain holes in the four corners.

-----------
  • The roof opening panel leaks
  • Roof opening panel adjustment.
  • Front rail seal.
  • Drain tube attachment points.
  • Roof opening panel water trough and seal.
  • Roof opening panel drain hose.
  • Roof opening panel seal.
  • Roof opening panel.

Rear floorboard behind driver set wet after rain

do you have a sun roof, if so start there, because there are two hoses at the back corners of the roof pan that allow water to drain, if they leak, they will soak the rear floorboards, and if not that check the door jam seals.(note that if the plugs on the floor are missing that will be verry hard not to have wet carpet)........let me know?

There is a water leak somewhere in my 98 toyota camry that leaks into my passenger side floor. There is no sun roof and no visible leaks from the windows or doors. Any thoughts? A/C leak maybe? water...

I am the original owner of camry xle 1998 with wet floors. In 2000 I had drivers side door seal leaking at welt. Removed old door seal and new weather strip on drivers side installed. The door panel was never wet, but wet at bottom of door where there are drain holes...slowly leaking under carpet.
In 2001 later water again. Coming from overflowing A/C evaporator-drain plugged/ tank full of debris. Removed evaporator, cleaned + drain cleaned.
In 2003, driver door seal against window rotted. Removed door panel and found leak at window belt molding at the mirror joint inside + out. Lots of mold under carpet needed to replace! Made a fuss at dealers for reacurring problem and they replaced the carpet for free.
