I'm trying to install Microsoft Server2003 on a Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server. I belive that the CD ROM is faulty since it doesn't boot off it even though I have the right settings in BIOS. I try to connect a external CD ROM since the data cable to the internal CD ROM is a unusual size/plug. However the computer freezes upon start up (at the first screen) or in BIOS if I connect it there. Please advise, Thank you

- Replacing the CD drive with one from a laptop solved the issue for me.
Another common way around installation is to copy the whole contents of the CD / DVD to a hard drive.
There are a few methods.
My proffered is to make a bootable flash drive on another machine with known working capabilities that will bot into either an XP-pre installation scenario or a Dos based one.
From there it is often possible to start the installation or even copy the required files to a drive on a machine.
Advantage of copying the files is that the CD / DVD would never be needed to add additional component as they are stored on the machine itself.
That also speeds up installation dramatically.
Bios consideration mus be taken into account when booting from flash drives.
Proper external Hard drives are another viable option

I didn't have a Flash drive available but I changed the CD drive (laptop cd drive) and it worked. Seems like the other one didn't recognize the CD.

Just got a used PowerVault 770N, that thing does not boot up at all. I get no VGA Display/output, no keyboard light, the system status light is blue for a few seconds, then the caution indicator blinks ("off" status + "blinking" caution = The system has detected an error and requires attention according to the Dell troubleshooting guide). I don't think I can use console redirection at this time to troubleshoot this further. I looked into finding a manual for the motherboard to see if any of the internal LED would give me any kind of hint on what's wrong (since no post code/sound is heard, I'm at loss). What would you guys try first/next?
