HP6500 wireless printer says ink cartridge is missing or damaged. Any one else having this problem?

First you should do is turn the printer completely off and unplug form wall outlet(This will reset the printer). Next take out all the ink cartrideges and make sure that all the metal contacts are clean from debris and check the contacts on the printer also((Clean with 91% isopropyl alcohol with a soft cloth)). Reinsert the cartridges and plug it back in and turn the printer back on.

Under the HP software, try to check each one there is a utility called Service my Printer & perform the servicing & it'll get resolved.

Sounds like your Printer Driver has been corrupted. If so install another one. Also check to see whether the printer will print a TEST PAGE. If not, is there Ink in the cartridge? You'll be surprised! Good Luck. George

I have an ongoing problem with my HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer. Everytime I need to change the three color cartridges, I get the same error message: "The following ink cartridges appear to be...


This normally happens when the "window" on the ink cartridge is dirty. It may not even appear to be dirty, which is hard to tell, because it is a cloudy and dark gray color, but it still needs cleaning.

The manual (at least on 6500) says to clean the little "window" on the cartridge. For some reason this needs to be done even though it is new and you receive the message.

If cleaning with a normal cloth does not work, try cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol as well as this usually does the trick.

This has unfortunately been a common problem with the HP6500 printers.

Hello, If the printer shows that the cartridge is missing and your cartridge is new, then you should pull out the cartridge and look for any inks or dirts on the back of the cartridges try cleaning it with some water and cotton or you can use an isopropryl alcohol to clean it, reinsert the cartridges and see if it fixes it,mostly the cartridge missing error happens due to dried inks or dirts on the back of the cartridges where it will connect with the printer. I changed all the ink cartridges and my printer says cartridge is missing or damaged. Went to the store and bought another ink cartridge but it still says the same thing?


Lift the top of the printer as if you are going to replace cartridges. When the print head comes into view you should see a grey lever on the right hand side. Lift it and reseat it. That worked for me!

Solution : Replace the indicated ink cartridge(s) immediately so that you can resume printing. If there are no ink cartridges missing from the HP All-in-one, the ink cartridge contacts might need to be cleaned.

IF there is no ink cartridge missing from the HP All-in-One, and you still receive this message after cleaning the ink cartridge contacts, you might have a damaged ink cartridge. Replace the ink cartridge.

I just refilled my HP6500 ink cartridge 920. The ink level indicator still shows a low level of ink. How do I reset the ink indicator.


There is no way to reset the ink levels on this cartridge type yet. Any replacement chips on the internet are violating patent law. Once the chip tells the printer it is empty it will not print no matter how much ink is left in it. There is always a lag time between the introduction of a new cartridge type and the ability to fill it properly. For refills I would recommend Cartridge World when this cartridge type can be refilled.
