How to clean a laptop fan

Gateway laptops can overheat just like any other computer brands. It is natural for laptops to heat during use. However, Gateway laptops that overheat can be the result of dust within the computer's internal components, fan faliure or frequent multi-tasking by the user (going back and forth from one window or program to the next). The laptops can overheat the central processing unit (CPU) which can run the risk of damaging the computer's motherboard, video card and memory.

Check the Gateway's PC Health status to view the current temperature settings under the computer's BIOS menu. According to Gateway, "the temperature is usually displayed in degrees Celsius. Faster processors and those with larger onboard L2 cache memory s tend to run hotter than slower processor and those with smaller L2 memory caches." Make sure that the CPU temperatures is no more than 50-55 Celsius. If it is higher than 55 Celsius, then the laptop's internal components should be cleaned. Open up the laptop to fix the fan. First, turn off the laptop and unplug the AC adapter. Turn the laptop over to expose the battery compartment. Unscrew the battery compartment with a small Philips screwdriver to internal fan. Free the fan of dust. According to The Washington Post, "hit the fan in short bursts from lots of different angles, making sure to blow most frequently in the direction of the air vent." Use an air compressor on low to blow out the dust. Caution getting the air compressor too close to the fan as it can damage the computer's internal components. Disassemble and clean up clogged air vents with a dry rag if you have more experience with computer components (do not attempt to dissemble air vents with out prior experience). Read the Gateway laptop user's manual for proper procedure instructions on cleaning out the computer's air vents. (or contact a Gateway service representative to help walk you through the process). Gateway screne works but is dark and runs hot

When using a Gateway laptop computer you may notice the screen occasionally flickers dull to bright.

Although this usually doesn't prevent you from working on the computer it can be rather annoying.

Usually the culprit is something simple and you can correct the issue in a matter of minutes.

However, if your Gateway laptop is a few years old, the screen may just be failing, in which case you either need to replace the screen or purchase a new computer.

Locate the Fn (Function) key on your keyboard.

It may be on the bottom left side with dark blue letters.

Locate the two "brightness" keys near the top of the keyboard.

These will be in the "F" keys, possibly if F6 and F7.

They should have little sun pictures or something similar to indicate brightness.

Hold down the Fn key while pressing F7, or whichever "F" key your laptop uses to increase brightness.

Tap F7 repeatedly until you reach the desired brightness.

Fn must be held down as you continue to tap.

Gateway Laptop Overheating

Certain Gateway laptops, as well as other brands, have an infamous reputation for overheating and abruptly shutting down.

This can be frustrating and highly problematic, especially if you are in the middle of creating an important document or winning a game.

Find out what you can do to solve and prevent this problem.

Significance

Laptops come in many shapes, sizes, and styles.

Unlike their desktop counterparts, the components of various laptops are far less consistent.

This means one laptop uses completely different equipment or technology than the next brand or model, different ways to bundle all those components inside the little cases, and different ways of cooling off.

Because of this, certain models tend to overheat more often. If your laptop relies on a fan or drawing air through the case to cool, it will be more prone to overheating.

Effects

When your laptop relies on small holes in the case to ventilate and cool off, dust and dirt commonly accumulate in these openings.

This will end up blocking your laptop's airflow, causing it to overheat and shut down. Environmental sources can cause these effects as well.

If you expose your laptop to full sunlight for an extended period of time or lock it in your hot car, the heat will affect it.

Other causes can be close proximity to a heater or radiator, or simply a dead fan motor.

Prevention/Solution

Clean dust and dirt from your laptop.

Start by shutting it down completely, removing any cables and cords, and removing the battery pack.

Use dry cotton swabs to clean out slots and small openings.

Remove any covers over the fan or other components, and dust with swabs here as well.

A can of compressed air with a long, thin, straw-like attachment will help you reach other dusty yet inaccessible areas.

Replace the battery and other covers prior to turning your laptop back on.

Considerations

Specially made notebook pads sit beneath your laptop and safely draw heat away from it. These attachments are inexpensive, with prices ranging from under twenty dollars to around fifty dollars.

They are easy to use, too. All you need to do is plug it into your laptop with a USB cable. Avoid using your laptop outside, especially on hot, sunny days.

If your desk is near an east- or west-facing window, be sure to close the blinds or curtains, or consider rearranging your furniture.

Warning

If repeated overheating occurs, your laptop can become unstable or even stop working altogether, so take steps to remedy this problem right away.

Do not force cotton swabs into tight areas when cleaning.

You could damage sensitive components inside.

Be careful when using compressed air to clean your laptop, especially near the motor fan.

If the air spins the fan blades too much or too quickly it can actually damage the motor bearings.

Likewise, don't invert the spray can during use.

This can cause the liquid inside to become extremely cold, which can damage your laptop.

Check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-February-2012/1490

Your Gateway laptop's heat sink is one of the primary cooling devices for your processor.

The heat sink moves heat away from the processor, keeping its temperature at a nominal level.

Keeping your processor cool is important as overheating can cause severe damage to your system.

Your heat sink may become clogged with dust which will require proper cleaning.

Cleaning your Gateway laptop's heat sink can be accomplished in several steps.

Remove the face plate of your keyboard. Your face plate will usually be attached by several plastic hinges located near the sides of the base; remove these with care.

Remove the keyboard from your Gateway laptop by removing the four or more screws that secure it.

These screws are located near the corners of your laptop.

Make sure you don't lose these screws as you will need them later when you reassemble your laptop.

Remove the screws securing your display unit to your Gateway laptop's base.

The screws will be found at the back of your laptop's base where the monitor is attached.

Unplug the video and WI_FI cables and remove the monitor from your Gateway laptop's base.

Remove the screws and take off the outer shell of your laptop.

You will now be able to see your laptop's components.

Blow compressed air into the heat sink to clean it.

Your heat sink is the fan located near the left side of your laptop.

If you are unable to clean the heat sink using compressed air, gently wipe the heat sink with a microfiber cloth.

Reassemble your laptop to complete the operation.

Hope this helps.

How to clean the fan air

Regular maintenance of your Compaq Presario laptop helps to keep the machine running properly.

Keeping the fans clean is especially important, because the fans blow out hot air and bring in fresh air to cool down the laptop.

Fans attract dust, however, which can slow them down, resulting in a hot laptop.

If the laptop overheats, vital parts can cease functioning altogether.

Consequently, keeping your laptop's fans clean is crucial.

or Remove an HP Presario C500 Fan Assembly to clean it

HP Presario C500 is a laptop that, like most other laptops, requires a clean, functioning fan in order to work properly.

If your fan is too full of dust to function properly or needs to be replaced because it is no longer working, then your computer could be in danger of overheating and crashing.

Instead of having to purchase a new laptop because your C500's fan has failed, remove it and clean the fan or replace it with a new one.

Turn off your computer and unplug all the cords and cables from it, even the power cable.

Turn the laptop over and remove the battery, then remove all the screws at the bottom of the computer with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Remove the two face plates from the bottom of the computer and you'll see the hard drive and RAM below.

The face plates will come out easily once the screws are removed.

Remove the two screws holding the hard drive in place and then lift the hard drive out.

Remove the screw found directly below the hard drive.

Turn the laptop over again and pop off the keyboard.

If all the screws at the bottom of the computer where removed, then the keyboard will come right out.

Remove all the screws underneath the keyboard and case and then lift the case enough to access the fan assembly in your HP Presario C500.

Unhook the cable coming from the fan into the motherboard and remove the screws holding the fan in place, then pop the fan out of the computer.

Hope this helps

My gateway Ml3706 laptop shuts off after 5-10 min of using. they keyboard gets hot and the fan does not click in. i cleaned the computer of dust but im not sure if i need to pull the fan out and clean it...

Random reboots are usually an overheating problem. First step is to look into the vents and see if they are clear of dust, fuzz, animal hair etc.
If they are clear you will need to access the fan/heatsink. The heatsink can accumulate dust depending on the design. If the fan sounds "abnormally loud" it could have bad bearings from dust and dirt and may need to be replaced.
Most laptops come with some way to monitor the temp, usually in the bios. Occasionally they come with a utility. You can use that to check the heat levels.

Your computer is shutting down due to overheating. Since the fan is making noise it is not working or cooling correctly either because it has lint or debris interfearing with the fan blades, ot the fan bearing is going out. To determine this you need to access the fan and clear it of any blockage. You will need to remove the keyboard to access it. Not all Gateway models are the same but once under the keyboard you should be able to work with it. CLICK HERE for keyboard removal instructions. If you find lint or dust blocking the fan exhaust at the heatsink and can clear that out your laptop will run much cooler and should solve your problem. If the trouble is with the fan itself you can still find a replacement and be able to swap it out.

(if the removal of the fan requires removal of the heatsink assembly you will also need to apply new thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink after cleaning the old compound off with rubbing alcohol.)

I think the solution bit is went inside those keys. Try to dry the whole laptop with the use of the fan, hair dryer etc. If still the problem is there then better to take it for service center to check thoroughly because as you suspect the key may be gone bad completely.
