Just Clean yer Head with a cleaner cassette, get the type that does wet the dry... If that don't do it then you will need to replace the transfer belt that rotates the tape spindle as it probably isn't turning it at the right speed due to loss of its elasticity.

This sounds like the LCD and CCT in the Lens is dead, not a cheap repair if this is the case, pop it to a camera shop like Jessops.

What does a lithium battery do for a sony ccd-fx310 handycam?

That battery is only for the Time and Date, meaning that if the battery is dead or missing you will have to reset the date and time every time you record. When you turn off the camera the Time and Date go back to Zero!, replacing the battery will keep the time and date up to date.

Image and sound problems at playback

your tape guides are out of calibration on all your pre - recorded tapes , or they are out of adjustment ( maybe even loose ) now ; - - put your camcorder close , next to your ear ? and . . . listen ! to a new tape in play mode - if you hear a fluttering sound like a deck of cards being shuffled softly , the camera is damaging all your tapes and needs alignment ;
