Yes it is for the Inverter, but it will depend on your skill, and patience. (Not trying to sound 'uppity')
It is my belief that you can do it. The Backlight is a little tougher. Again, it depends on you.

I would recommend buying, and wearing an ESD wrist s trap. (<- certain words key censure, hence the typing error on purpose)
Average cost of one is around $6 U.S.
(Radio Shack is one example of a store that has them)
The alligator clip is connected to a good ground. I connect mine to the metal frame of an empty desktop computer case.
Your body carries static electricity. Static will fry out delicate computer hardware components. The Electro Static Discharge wrist device prevents this.

Before you start, Remove the AC adapter, (Charger), and Battery.

This is HP Support, and the page to download the Maintenance and Service Guide. (It is a Service Manual) This will show you how to remove the Inverter, and the LCD screen to get to the Backlight. Does not show you how to replace the Backlight. The Backlight bulb is a CCFL bulb. USE care when handling, and rubber gloves are advisable. This is to protect You if the bulb is accidentally broken when removing, or installing. It is a Cold Cathode ->Fluorescent Light.

On this page scroll down with your eyes to the heading->
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. Click on it.
This is a PDF file. It may take 20 to 30 seconds, before you will see the first page. After the first page comes up, let it download all the way, before looking through it.

[To save a copy to your computer so that you will have it always available, and also copy off to CD disk, you may want to do this:

Left-click on the Floppy Disk icon in the upper header. It is the second icon from the Left. Hovering your mouse cursor on it will briefly reveal, "Click to save this to your computer or another location"]

In this Service Manual I would start with Page 106.
Removal and Replacement Preliminaries.
(All page designations from me, refer to the page number at the top of the PDF file header.
In the box to the right of the blue down arrow)

Gives you background information on static precautions, tools you may need, how to handle cable connectors, and other helpful tidbits, before you start working on your laptop.
[Pages 106 through 113]

Now go to Page 145. Display Assembly
On this page you will see a references to remove other components first. The Section numbers are listed. (Section 5.3 is Page 119. Section 5.8 is Page 130)
You also have to remove the Keyboard, and Switch Cover. (Pages 137 and 141 respectively)

Page 152 shows removing the Inverter assembly.

This article from Laptop Repair Help, may help in understanding the procedures in replacing a Backlight bulb,

You can search online for inverters and backlight bulbs for the HP Pavilion dv2000 pretty easily. Make sure you obtain the correct one/s. Do your research, and be aware that the inverter MUST be matched, with YOUR laptops LCD screen. HAS to be the right one. Same thing with the Backlight.

The HP Pavilion dv2000 you have stated, may be THE correct model number, (dv2000), or it may be one of the dv2000 Series. Look on the bottom of your laptop in the Service Tag, and be sure you refer to this Exact model number.
(For example: You may have a dv2310us, or anyone of the dv2000 series)

Wanted to add, that there is a way to test if it is the Inverter, or the Backlight, instead of just changing parts out, and hoping for the best.

(For example changing out the Backlight, {since it is the cheapest, But ->Hardest to replace}, then going to the Inverter)

However it takes test equipment to do this, and a fair background in electronics. Make a mistake here, and you'll 'lose' the LCD screen, or Inverter.

All I can offer is to examine the Backlight, and see if there is any obvious signs of damage. (Dark spot/s on tube, obvious discoloring),

I have found that the Backlight is the first component that usually goes bad, between the Inverter or the Backlight. ( I have also found that not too long 'Down the Road', the Inverter goes bad also)
I would compare the price of replacing these components, to the option of a different laptop.
(For me replacing the components, outweighs replacing the laptop. Just my own observation)

If the back light is out you won't be able to change the brightness at all. Make sure it's plugged into a power source for full brightness, you can also try and change the settings for your monitor by right clicking on your desktop and clicking personalize and display settings.

How to adjust contrast

Are you asking because the screen has gone dark?Darkness is a backlight issue, can be the screen backlight, inverter or the cable itself causing it.Screen too bright can be adjusted via personalization or often keyboard shortcuts that have what looks like a sun symbol on them, the left key darkens when pressed and the right brightens

Dark screen, no backlight

I am sure that your BACKLIGHT is dead...Have someone or a tech take a look at it. The problem can be the backlight or the inverter itself... But most likely it's the backlight that goes out. You might be better of getting the LCD screen replace... Unless you find the backlight for that laptop model...

But first, play around with the BRIGHTNESS settings, make sure it's not on VERY LOW...

Dv4000 hp pavilion dark screen

Have you replace the lcd inverter? if it works on external monitor, given the screen is new, then it leaves the inverter. Usually in the case of dark screen, it should be the first thing to check/replace.

Can not see anything on the screen

If you see a very dim image or black screen or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

LAPTOP ZT1000 SCREEN IS DARK SEE JUST WHEN IS SUNNY

your problem is a faulty ccfl BackLight Inverter, the display uses the backlight to illuminate the lcd screen, the inverter is used to illuminate the cold cathode light in the back of ther lcd theirs countless places to laern about it on google.
They are cheap to replace google your model with inverter at the end..

The backlight is dead thats why you can only see when in the sunlight.
