Two things; one, the winch, even though the lever says 'free wheel' could still be getting some power. Verify with meter at winch motor.
OR; 'residual magnetism' is turning the motor slightly, without much 'real power'.

John Deere 2012 648g3 skidder winch will let out, when you try to winch in it will roll slack out of cable, but winch won't lock up and pull hard. How can I fix it?

if your saying that winch will take in and let out ok but wont hold a load in tension , then your winch directional valve or the winch motor is worn out and is allowing oil to pass right thru it regardless of it not being activated as skidder winches don't have a brake like electric winches do it uses the power of the oil locked into motor to hold a load ( that's also why id never stand under a load suspended by one !!!)

Gearmatic winch 19 on a Cat 518. Winch pulls in powerfully all the time. Lever position does nothing.

Was installing a winch on my 2009 prowler 700 xtx hooked positive cable to selanoid winch did not work, hooked direct to battery, works, rig wont start

Where did you ground the winch motor? You need a separate, heavy duty, switch with a relay to transfer the positive side voltage properly... DO NOT ground to the battery..use a clean, free of paint, place to ground. You may have fried the not connect the positive side to the solenoid. Direct connection to the + battery from the relay is good with a good waterproof fuse in line. Sometimes I have seen the "maint. free" batteries die when used "wrong" and still show 13 volts+.

If reversing the lines doesn't help, see if the winch wants a bleed line, back to tank.

The winch on my 518c cable skidder wont work right !!

I would check the hydro fluid, if you run low this may happen. also the may be a flow adjustment on the winch itself maybe an Allen fitting. Good luck

Do i need a certain wiring harness to put a winch on my arctic cat four wheeler or just the one that comes with the winch and that on the four wheeler it self

your artic cat may have a plug for your winch and again it may not. Call any artic cat dealer and tell them what you want to do. Have them recommend a winch that is compatable with your 4-wheeler and get a price that includes installation.
