Question about Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Nikkor Lens

Nikkor 70-300 f/ 4.5-5.6 AF noise followed by "click"

I just got a new Nikkor 70-300 yesterday. When taking some practice shots, I noticed the AF is quite noisy and followed by a "click." I am not sure if it is the lens or my camera (which I accidentally dropped a few feet to a tile floor not long ago). Any experience with a clicking noise in the Nikkor 70-300? Thanks much.

Thanks for the response. I tried a friend's lens on my camera and there was no clicking noise, so at least I have isolated it to the lens. I am going to go to a store to test a similar lens. I am not so worried about the motor noise as the "clicking" noise I get.

Well most AF mode do make a noise of some sort because its trying to adjust for a clear shot. I've played with several cameras and their features and notice this is a common thing, its usually the camera. But if your really worried about it and it does bother you, just take it in for a service. Maybe because of you dropping it several times, the noise is more louder now.

Which camera are you using? If the body has AF/MF switch, put that also to MF.If this fails to help, take out the lens and try to change it to MF.

Problem with the Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200 zoom lens.

I just had the same exact problem! However, in my case I was finishing up a photo shoot at work, went to switch lenses, and when I picked up my 55-200mm zoom lens, the tip of it fell off!! I was able to put it back into the end of the lens, but now I am having the same autofocus problem and sound effect. I think it is because it is off track inside the lens. But I have only had mine for 5 months! I'm preparing to send it to Nikon for warrenty repair.
