The Orecks I have worked on have a plastic handgrip area surrounding a metal handle rod.
Undo the handle screws and the handle should separate like a **** shell revealing the switch and harness. Pull gently on the wire terminal with a pair of needle nose pliers not behind it.
Be careful not to flex the switch contacts as they may break off. reinstall any insulation around the switch before reasembling.

My Oreck XL vacuum was goign along just fine and then it turned off. Tried several different outlets, nada. There was not noise or smell prior.

A common problem with orecks is that the cord shorts out as well as the plug. with you model the switch is at the base of the vacuum so it wouldnt be the switch. the best idea would be to take it in to an Authorized Oreck Dealer. I know at my stores we dont charge for service estimates. if it is the cord we could confirm it. but it cost about $50 for a brand new cord and the labor to install it.

My Oreck XL is shooting dust out from the roller when I try to vacumn

This is a sign that the bag is full or there's a clog in the air flow piping. Check behind the brush for clogs and remove if there is. Open the cloth bag, remove the paper bag, and check inside the tube. If no blockage is visible, drop a coin or marble down the opening and see if it rolls out. If not, there's a clog that needs removed. You can use an air pressure hose to blow it out..

The bag won't stay on in the bag container

I thought my Oreck upright vacuum was broken because the bag wouldn't stay on. Even worse, when the bag popped off, I couldn't figure out how to get it back on. There was no satisfy 'click' or any other indication that the bag was installed properly. A good percentage of the time, it wasn't actually installed properly, and the dirt just collected in the space between the bag and the bag holder. (The easiest way to recover from this messy situation was to vacuum out the Oreck with another vacuum! When I do this, I can't help but think how embarrassed the Oreck must feel to be humilated in this manner . . .)

Anyway, after a trip to the Oreck dealer to purchase a replacement part for what I thought must surely be a broken bag-holder assembly, I now know that it's the design itself that is defective. After all the money we paid for the Oreck, my wife won't let me get rid of it. So I just use the cannister vac we got for free with the upright and spot vacuum instead. (I'm seriously thinking about breaking something inside the Oreck so my wife will let me throw it out and get a new vaccuum. We bought a new vacuum recently to use at our vacation cabin for a fraction of the price and it's a joy to use compared to the Orec - it was a Consumer Rerports "Best Buy".)

Oreck XL upright - has a 2 speed switch. Now only works in high speed not low speed. Will a new switch correct or is it the motor

Your vacuum is fine. The switch can either run at full speed or half speed. You are running at full speed, you need a new 2 speed switch. You can pick them up at an Oreck Store for $29 or around $15 on eBay

On/off switch for Oreck XL2600HH

Would have to assume by now you figured this out. However, need to open up the handle. It is a clamshell arrangement. Remove switch from handle, pull one wire at a time from the switch. The electrical connectors are a push-on type. Replace each one, one at a time, to the new switch, and then re-insert switch into handle. Close up the clamshell, tightening all of the screws, but do not strip the plastic housing.

I need diagram of replacing on/off switch for Oreck XL2600

Manual would not, they want you to pay a service tech.

Believe this model has switch in grip,
1. Unplug unit.
2. remove screws from grip.
separate the grip halves to access switch.
3. I believe the power cord, where it enters the grip, has slip on terminals that fit on the switch. Just substitute the wires and re-assemble.

Should not require any soldering. Be careful, routing of the cord in the handle is difficult as I remember, depending on the year model, sometime in late 90s they went from a molded in strain relief to a serpentine path.
