If the noise you hear is clicking or pinging then you may well have the "Click Of Death"

That said try the steps below and lets hope thats not the case.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.

Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

My Hitatchi 250GB External Harddrive is not working at all when plugged in to any computer I own/use It makes soft beeping sounds for several minutes and then becomes silent The lights are on, showing

take the hard drive to a computer repair shop but from your description , it may be dead
if it is a disc type hard drive , then continually moving it around is not good for the delicate workings
if it is dead , replace it with a solid state hard drive which has no moving parts and is a lot more robust

I'm running it on a laptop with windows vista home edition. All worked well until I dropped it. The pc doesn't detect it anymore, the blue lights don't flicker anymore, and it makes a ticking...

Dropping a hard drive is never a good thing. They are very sensitive moving parts inside a hard drive and they don't take well to falls. It sounds to me like there was some damage when you dropped it and it may no longer work properly. The clicking is the hard drive trying to read the data and failing. You mentioned that it seemed to come back to life a couple of times...try and recover the data if you can, and contact Western Digital Tech support if you are still under warranty. Hope that helps!

Hard drive is not working.

The clicking noise is most likely the hard drive trying to restart or start the drive i think the motor is not turning thus no data being sen nor received

My Maxtor personal storage 3100 clicking and not recognised

If you can hear mechanical sounds from the case the problem is in the hard disk and moving it to your laptop isn't the solution. In that case check for a data recovery company at your area as sooner as posible. If the sound is no mechanical I'll tell you the way to move the HD. Describe me the kind of sound.

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

I wish you all the best.

Hard drive is full need more space

From Control Panel go to Add/Remove Programs

Remove programs that no longer useful to you and delete documents, pictures any file that you don't need anymore.
if you don't have nothing to do with removing programs and deleting files, you have to upgrade or add a secondary hard drive, or a external drive will be a helpful to you, move all your files to your external drive this will also counted as your backup files.
