My john deere is smoking and i can here it missing when it smoke all i smell is gas someone told me its the carb

well without the model number im guessing its a gas engine model , the condition your describing is a condition called "enriched" now in first start mode this is normal as a "choke" is placed on the inlet to carb to "enrich" the gas to allow it to start , after you place it to run mode then it should remove the choke and engine will increase in its speed and stop smoking and allows you to use it , if your engine isn't doing these things properly then its probable that your carb isn't preforming as it should and requires service (this doesn't allways mean replacement )

I have a John Deere 425 riding tractor that sounds like it wants to start but wont actually fire

Is the engine being cranked by the starter but it won't fire? You say you're getting spark? You need air, fuel, spark, and compression to start so...
Pull the air filter and see if it is blocked.
Inspect the choke plate to see if it is working properly.
Are the plugs getting wet when you try to start?
Take the gas cap off the fuel tank and try to start.
Take the plugs out and move the wires where they can't ground. Stick your finger (thumb) in one plug hole and with the throttle wide open and no choke crank the engine. Is there compression? Try the other plug hole. A compression tester would be better than a finger or thumb.
No compression can be popped push rods or a cam problem among other things.

1988 vt1100 is backfiring and won't run, how come?

You have to clean the carbs and sync them. Before you take them off, drain the fuel from carbs bowl.
If the carbs do not have the same amount of air and fuel, then you have back firing and popping, and one of the cylinders will over heat, that is not good for the engine . If you changed the pipes to a custom ones, then just sync the carbs, if you can not sync them, then you have to change the 2 jets (slow and main) in the carbs.

Take the spark plug out and see what it looks like. If it's dark, sooty or wet smelling like gas, then you have a spark problem. Might need new plugs, a new coil or charging the battery up.
If the spark plug is dry and is a light tannish, brownish color than your problem is not getting gas. If that's the case, take off the fuel supply line to make sure you have gas to the carb. If that is fine, then you might need to take the carb a part to make sure you don't have plugged jets or passageways in the carb itself. If you want to find out quick, you can squirt a little gas into the carb intake and see if the the engine pops off. That will tell you as well.

Good luck

86 el camino stalls under load

As mentioned above, engine could be starving for fuel; but
also consider ignition system - as engine makes more power, maximum cylinder pressures increase. A higher spark voltage is then needed to ignite mixture (at a few degrees before top dead center... top of piston travel).
If coil is weak, plugs fouled, or plug gap too wide, adequate spark may not occur. This may cause missing,
loss of power, sometimes backfiring (backfiring may occur if timing is off, or intake valve leaky, also). If you replace the fuel filter, 'kit' the carb, but problem remains,
look to ignition system.

Diagnostic process - put a fuel pressure gauge in line, where fuel line enters carb. Rig so can see gauge, while driving. Have a passenger watch fuel pressure as you drive; especially while accelerating. If fuel pressure drops during acceleration, then its either fuel pump or filter. If pressure remains stable, consider carb issue.
If possible, test with exhaust gas analyzer, while engine
under load (possibly at an emissions test place). If lean under acceleration, its a carb problem. If not, look at
ignition system (emission test diagnostics should help here, also). Oh, and one thing I did once.... forgot to release parking brake..... duh.

Best of luck !
