Locate the idler pulley to the left of the crankshaft pulley. The idler pulley bolts to the idler arm. The idler pulley is replaced with the arm because they are sold as one unit.

• 2 Place a 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the face of the idler pulley and pull up on the handle. This releases tension on the Sonoma's serpentine belt. Pull the belt off the idler pulley, lower and remove the ratchet handle.
• 3 Remove the two bolts that secure the idler arm to the engine block using a socket and ratchet, and discard the old idler arm.
• 4 Place the new idler arm against the engine block and secure it using the socket and ratchet.
• 5 Put the ratchet driver into the square hole on the new idler pulley, pull up on the handle and place the serpentine belt over the pulley.
• 6 Lower and remove the ratchet handle.

In scientific problems the powers of 10 are the easiest thing to handle if you keep in mind two or three rules.
1. 1/10^(a) = 10^(-a)
2. (10^a)*(10^b) = 10^(a+b)
3. (10^a)/(10^b) = 10^(a-b)
4. (10^a)^b=10^(a*b)
Example : suppose you want to calculate the charge to mass ratio of the electon
m_e= 9.109534 E-31 kg
q_e=1.6021892 E-19 C

q_e/m_e= (1.6021892/9.109534)* (E-19)*(E 31) C/kg
q_e/m_e= (1.6021892/9.109534)* (E 31-19) C/kg
q_e/m_e= (1.758804786 E-1)* (E 12) C/kg
q_e/m_e= 1.7588048 E 11 C/kg

If you just use your calculator to operate on the mantissas (multiplications and divisions) and handle the powers of 10 by hand, you will make fewer errors, especially if you are not confident in your mastery of the calculator as regards exponents.

This doesn't sound like a problem with your idler pulley to me, more like an axle or wheel bearing? But to check your pully just pull it back with the correct tool, some use a square 3/8 or 1/2 regular socket drive and a breakover works great. some you can just get the correct size boxend wrench on it and pull it back, after you have the tension off the belt remove the belt, spin idler pully and see if it is bad, try and wiggle the arm back and forth with a pry bar. it should have very little play in it.
