Cause This error can occur for several reasons. Some factors that might contribute to the problem:

  • The paper in the input tray is not correctly aligned
  • Using torn or wrinkled paper
  • Using paper that has previously been printed on
  • The rear access door is not fully seated or locked into place
  • The paper feed rollers have accumulated dust or paper particles
  • An envelope is being printed and the flap is not tucked down

Check how much paper is on the tray. If you are experiencing frequent paper jams, make sure that you are not exceeding the maximum tray capacity. According to the HP user guide, the HP Officejet 4315 can only handle 10 mm of paper in the paper tray.

  • Step 2
Remove any paper jams if you are experiencing an error message on the display on the front of the printer. To do this, lift up the automatic document feeder located on the front of the printer. Then, gently pull the paper from the rollers.

  • Step 3
Update the HP software if the HP product assistant continually displays on your computer screen. This will usually happen each hour if this occurs. See the Resources section below for a link to the updated drivers. Download and install the drivers.

  • Step 4
Verify that the phone cables are properly inserted into the wall jack and the back of the printer if you are receiving a "Phone off the hook" error message.

  • Step 5
Perform a partial reset if you are experiencing problems scanning or printing your document. To do this, disconnect the power cord from the wall. Then, hold the "#" and "3" while reconnecting the power cord. Release the buttons once the cord is plugged in. Try to rescan or reprint your document.

  • Step 6
Perform a semi-full reset if the partial reset did not work. To do this, unplug the power cord. Hold "#" and "6" buttons while plugging the cord back in. Then, release the buttons and try to rescan or reprint your document

This is a very common problem for most HP units. There are sensor pads before and after the feed rollers that sense the movement of the paper and are on lookout for tension that stays on a feed sensor. What happens over time is these feed sensors get dirty and caked with a sticky paper residue along with the rollers. All this causes the device to think it has a jamb when it doesn't feed something through smoothly enough. The device needs a good cleaning, this can be done with alcohol or a suitable cleaner along with using compressed air from a can. Good luck with it.

    SOURCE: Fax Jam

hp tells me to do the following
    does this help you ?

Issue While printing, copying, or receiving a fax, a paper jam occurs. If the jammed paper is removed incorrectly, other problems may occur. Clearing paper jams Remove the jammed paper by following the steps below: WARNING: Jammed paper must be removed using the rear access door to avoid mechanical damage. Do not remove jammed paper from the front of the all-in-one.

    1. Turn off the HP product and turn it so the back of the all-in-one faces you.
    2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the all-in-one. CAUTION: The power cord must be disconnected to allow the paper feed rollers to turn freely and avoid mechanical damage.
    3. Locate and open the rear access door by pressing in on the left side tab to release the catches and then pulling the door toward you. Figure 1: Removing the rear access door c00100775.jpg
    4. Inspect the pressure rollers on the rear access door and verify that they are clean and turn freely. Clean the rollers if needed with a soft towel lightly moistened with water. If the rollers do not turn freely, replace the rear access door. Click How to Buy on this page to order replacement parts.
    5. From the rear access door opening, remove the jammed paper.
    6. Remove the remaining paper from the paper supply tray. Discard any paper that is damaged or crumpled and then re-stack and reload the paper into the paper supply tray.
    7. Reinstall the rear access door.
    8. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the all-in-one.
Preventing paper jams The following information will help prevent paper jams from occurring:
    • Never use paper that is wrinkled or damaged in any way.
    • If you are having problems using paper that has already been printed on once (recycling), replace it with fresh paper.
    • Remove and then reinstall the rear access door. Verify that the access door is fully locked in place. The paper can skew if the rear access door isn't locked.
    • Every six months to one year, clean the paper feed rollers with a rag lightly moistened with clean water. Over time the paper feed rollers accumulate dust and do not function as well as they once did.
    • When printing envelopes, tuck the flap into the envelope and crease the folds before printing.

SOURCE: I am having trouble with faxing information to another fax.

I have had this problem before. Either your fax is not hooked up properly or whoever you are trying to send the fax to does not have their fax hooked up properly. If it's not one of these problems makes you have the right fax number and that you are putting the fax number in correct. Some fax require the whole number to be entered 1 including the area code.

The course of the problem could well be when you pulled the paper the wrong way out ot clear the jam. Open the machine and have a close look at the unerside of the flap. There should be a micro switch, which could well be desloged.

    Hi zoaj,

More then likely you have the fax set up to USE A DIALING PREFIX.

Therefore it is automatically doing this, regardless of what you input.

Follow the proceedure below ( which comes directly from the users manual for your printer type ) to change this. Delete the " USE A DIALING PREFIX " information.

once that is done, it will no longer automatically add the prefix for you. :)

I have BOLDED the relevant information below that pertains to this.

Please take a moment to evaluate my solution. Your appropriate rating of my solution would be greatly appreciated.

Take the swinging drum cover off of the toer cartridge and throw it away. It's only for shipping. They come loose and block the paper path.

Put the number you want to forward to in a one touch number position. (if you have to dial 9 for an outside line, be sure to put that into the one touch number also).
