I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

My ASUS F5SL laptop doesn't recognize my flash drive. It recognizes my mouse, my mp3 player but won't recognize my flash drive pen or my psp. Can, please, someone help me? I'm running Wind

have you tried different usb ports? hit the windows key and the R key at the same time and type diskmgmt.msc and go into disk manager and see if the flash drive shows up in the list of disks installed.

try to set bios as default, if it doesn't work, then try to run diagnostic tool of your computer.

Hi . I have an old original X Box console It turns on and it sounds like it is going to work then it says that it doesn't recognize the disk.

Check for the disc to be clean, and if possible use a lens cleaner on the unit. If this doesn't work, the DVD laser must be damaged. In that case, you must replace it.

Hp nc8000 laptop. Installing used hard drive. Laptop doesn't recognize hard drive when installingXP Pro with disc. Recognized in bios. With install disc only sees previous opsys partition.

Verify that all previous data, partitions, format version etc.... has been removed. If this is a used hard drive it would be advised to erase and clean the drive before use. This can be done with various disk tools or boot disks and/or various open source software products. This is usually a user preferance when using tools of this type. Once the disk has been cleaned and initialized it should be ready for the Windows installation.
If after cleaned and initialized the disk does not show under windows the it could be no good!!!

Acer aspire 5315 fails to recognise disc when inserted.

The dvd unit has a lens that is used to read the disks - if this lens is dirty or defective the disks aren't recognized. Clean the lens using a cleaning disk that you can buy at every IT shop. If this doesn't help then you must replace the entire dvd unit - you will have to take your Acer to a repair shop.

Hi my dvd burner doesn't recognize my virgin disks

Sound like your cable that connects your burner to the motherboard. Try another cable, if you want to try another trouble shoot item, try connecting it behind the hard drive. Before you do set the jumper setting to slave on the burner and hook it up. That will help you to elimate a channel.

Hi, I have an external disk connected to an usb port. Sometimes my computer stop to recognize the connection and my external disk doesn´t works anymore, until the next reboot. What can I do to resolve...

The only other solution other than rebooting is to remove the cable from the usb port and reinsert it. Sometimes the computer will recognize the drive and it will work properly.
