Re: TV picture

The way I see this problem is this: Your child probably did not do anything to cause this. If your picture comes in for a while and goes out you are likely to have a bad connection in the vertical deflection IC especially if the sound stays on all the time. If the sound goes out too then you have other problems or connections elsewhere. The connections can be inspected and once found resolderd on the solder side of the chassis. Someone with electronic soldering experience is recommended. Hope this helps

Curing the "black box" on some TV channels

Here's the symptom: A mysterious black box covers some or most of the picture on your TV, but not all the time. It may not show up on all channels, or sometimes it disappears only to come back later.

No, it's not the picture tube, it's your closed-captioning. Somehow your TV has been set to "text mode", and the screen is being cleared for text that isn't there. On channels or shows where captions aren't being broadcast, there's no box. But the box returns when captioning is being sent.

Many TV set remote controls have a single button to set closed-caption modes, so it's easy to set a TV to "text" without knowing it. (Especially when you have kids who love to press buttons!) Then when the box pops up, it's a mystery.

Simply press the captioning button on the remote, or use the set's menu, to cycle through the settings until you turn captions off. No more box!

My rca truflat tv will get a black box pop up on the screen. It covers most of the picture. Sometimes there will be text in the box. If I adjust the volume it will disappear for a few seconds then come...

It is a Text or Description box that operates like Closed Captions. Cycle through the options by pressing the Caption button on the remote or go to the Caption menu and turn it off.

RCA TV, model number 32V550T. No picture but sound is fine.

this sometimes is quite simple to fix as it cud be a dry joint on the circuit board where the tube motor sits.

or it cud be the tube is on its way out, which wud be cheaper to buy a new tv rather than have it fixed

Takes about 5 minutes for picture to appear... Then every one to two minutes the picture disappears. It comes back on for 1 - 2 minutes then repeats. When set if first turned on, the stereo/stand-by light (red) flashes on/off until just before picture first appears .if your tv is very old than it might be due to crt getting weak crt base loose loose contact in power supply thanks
