Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

SimpleTech 250GB External Hard Drive can't be recognized

I got a problem with my SimpleTech HDD. I bought it a few months ago from Costco and it worked well with my both desktop (window xp) and laptop (window vista). And now it works with my desktop, but not my laptop. I don't know what happens. When I plug the HDD into my laptop (with Vista), nothing happens; I checked the disk management, it didn't show the drive. I use the same cable to plug the drive to my desktop (with XP), there is no problem. So HDD and cable are no problem since they worked well with my desktop. Anybody can help this issue?

    Hi Sundar2579,
I have tried 2 steps following your instruction, but it still doesn't work. the last one is to completely uninstall all UBS devices. I am not sure if I do it, any impacts to my computer? Do you mean just uninstall UBS root hubs? If uninstall them, how to reinstall or just automatically reinstall?
    Thanks,

Now I found the problem -- both HDD and printer go to dirve F, only printer can work with it, not HDD. I tried all USBs, it looks the devices only can map in F. How to fix it? Please help!

Thank you for a response. I tried everything what I can. The problem is still there. You are right -- my vista assigns a device to all the USB ports. I guess my laptop is HP ad the printer is HP also. When printer is plugged in, the computer automatically loads the drive and blocks the drive for other device use. Even I deleted the USBs drives and printer, reboot with HDD, but still can't be recognized at all. I also tried to hook with both HDD and printer, reboot the computer, printer diive showed, not HDD. I don't know what's going on. It looks HP printer drive blocks the USBs.

Try hooking up the drive with the printer also hooked up to the laptop at the same time. Hook the printer up first and then let windows find the printer then hook up the drive. And if that works... in the future try and hook up the printer and the drive to the same usb port you are using them in. Sometimes vista will assign a device to all usb ports when you connect it to a different port. You can also try shutting down the laptop and re-booting with the drive hooked up. Vista may recognize the drive when it starts up and assign it a port. Always make sure you use the safely remove hardware(eject) feature before removing a usb device in windows.

First of all,

uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in the device manager for USB Hub Properties, Power Management Tab.

Try rebooting the computer once as C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 file may be corrupted and need to be replaced (either restore a previous version or just delete it and try connecting again).

Next, completely uninstall all USB devices and the main hub and then re-install.

Hard Drive problem

Have a simpletech 96300-40001-001 external hard drive from couple years ago I bougt at Sam's. I have lost the installation software. It will now work on my laptop, the computer I bought it for because I installed it there when i bought it, but it will not work on the others (not recognized) and I cant seem to find a download of drivers that will make it work on this desktop and my other laptop. Do you know where I can get a copy of the original installation CD that came wih the hard drive. I am running XP Home on all three computers.

Purchased about two months ago. the external drive turns constatly making a grindin sound.

You need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
