Question about Lexmark X1270 All-In-One InkJet Printer

I keep getting a message saying the printer can't communicate with the computer. I've checked the usb port & changed cables but didn't help

Re-install your software like you did when it was new..then go to lex website and download new drivers. Make sure you do not let windows choose driver for you..tell it to install drivers from your disk.:)

My brother DCP-J140W won't scan. It keeps saying check connection but it is printing okay. Please help!


How is the all-in-one connected to your computer? The problem usually means that you do not have bi-directional communication between the printer and the computer.

If it is connected to your wireless network, did you ensure that the firewall allows the communication? (Some firewalls will automatically add the correct ports to the allowed list during the install of the full software.) For other firewall software or the less-complete install of the software drivers, you need to make sure that the port, 54925 , are allowed to access your computer for inbound and outbound network data. If adding that port is insufficient to allow scans to have bi-directional communication with the printer, also add port 137 (inbound and outbound). Since this step depends on your firewall, please add a comment with the firewall software on your computer. This is in the note in the Scanning section of the Brother Software User's manual for the DCP-J140W on page 35. This manual is available here: http://download.brother.com/welcome/doc002923/dcp140w_use_soft.pdf . An example of setting the Firewall rules for the Windows Firewall is shown starting on page 85 of the manual.

If your computer is connected to the printer via a USB cable, try a different (possibly shorter 6' or less) USB cable or a different port. If you have the printer connected to a USB hub, skip the hub and directly connect to the computer. Check if other devices work at the USB ports. Sometimes ports do fail; either they can't maintain the needed voltage or they don't keep the cable and pins properly aligned.

(I have seen the communication issues with stand-alone scanners as well. I saved a perfectly good scanner from the trash when the user failed to check if the scanner worked with other ports.)

INSUFFICIENT POWER - USB PORT
If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB device into the computer's USB port or the un-powered USB hub that is attached to the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive current that the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

Keep getting the error message "Printer not responding".


How are you connecting the printer to the computer? (USB, parallel, ethernet) Make sure there are no error messages/lights blinking and that the unit is on.

If you are using an USB cable, try a new cable. Also try a direct connection if you have a USB hub or print server in use. Make sure the USB ports are active (not disabled for power saving or security). Test the port with a known working device.

If you are using the parallel cable, make sure it is properly secured. Also try a new cable. Again try a direct connection instead of a print server.

If you are using an ethernet connection, again try a new cable. Check if your firewall is blocking communication with the printer. (Test this by temporarily turning off the firewall. If it starts working, make the printer a trusted part of the network. With some firewalls, you may need to unblock communication for both incoming and outgoing communication with the printer.)

Port not recognized - printer and computer do not communicate


unplug printer ,shut down printer, shut down computer, then restart computer, and plug printer back in after computer is fully up and running turn printer back on
and that should solve the problem

I keep getting a message about usb port missing


Hi hbailey10,

It sounds to me as though the USB port simply got reset and so it isn't communicating both ways (this can sometimes happen if you plug in or unplug a difference device in a nearby USB port). Here is my advice:

1) Try disconnecting the USB cable from your computer, wait 10 seconds, and then plug it back in.
2) If you still get the same error messagem then the problem is software-related, not hardware-related. You might try uninstalling and re-installing the driver for the printer. In the event that you don't have the disk from your printer handy, you can download the driver from the following web address:

http://downloads.lexmark.com/perl/downloads/downloads.cgi

If you still receive an error message, try to get the exact wording that we can figure out what's causing it.

Installing printer


Hi there!

1. Try another USB port at the laptop (if you have other USB ports in it).
2. Try a known working USB cable.
3. Try a different laptop/ computer.

This should further isolate your problem.

My printer will not communicate with the computer?


Try connecting the USB cable directly to the computer not via a HYB.

Try another USB port on the computer.

If that doesn't solve the problem there is most likely a problem with the printer.
