Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Trane XE1200 condensor for which I bought a replacement fan motor, same specs as the original G.E. motor. The original G.E. motor was wired to a dual capacitor, which is also wired to the compressor. The original G.E. motor had 4 wires, one of which was not hooked up. The replacement motor is an A.O. Smith model OAM10088 with 3 leads. Smith sent me a new 2-pole capacitor for the new motor. How do I wire it correctly?

OK, locate the terminals on the capacitor marked "HERM"(Compressor lead), "FAN", and "COM".(common)

HERM and COM remian as they are.

The wire going to "FAN" (usually brown) will be placed on either terminal of the new capacitor. (This is the ((usually brown)) wire comming off of the fan motor.) An additional wire needs to be run from the other terminal of the new capacitor to the "COM" on the old capacior.

What you are doing is bypassing the fan side of the old capacitor but still using the compressor side of the old Cap.

The fan should have a wiring diagram on it to help identify the wires if there is no brown wire. The other two wires will be identified on the wiring diagram as well, but one typically goes to the contactor and the other to the board.

I have a trane xe1200 heat pump and washed out my condenser coil.I wired it back in but I think my fan is running backwards,I feel hot air coming out of the louvers rather than from the top,is this...

Hi, you say you wired it back in? Yes it is possible for the fan to run backward if the motor is a reversible motor. And yes, if its not running in the right direction, it will not keep the head pressure down like it should. On a reversible motor, they have 4- wires at the rear normally, that you interchange to reverse it. I don't know what wires you disconnected, but unless this is a 3 phase motor which I no its not, you would have had to change those 4- reversing wires to make it run either ccw or cw. It will tell you on the motor how to do this and the rotation. The blade on the fan is positioned to scoop up the air when turning, so you can look at it and tell the direction it goes. Air is pulled through the coil and out the top, or your head pressure we stay high and cause damage to the compressor in the long run, or shut it off on high head switch. I hope this has helped you. Residential units are single phase motors that can only be reversed if made to be, and can be changed by switching those 4-wires around.

Trane XE1200 Fan Motor

Most likely problem with a not-so-old motor is the run capacitor for the fan.

Some units have fan & compressor capacitor combined into one -- others are separate.

The capacitor can be tested with a multi-meter with an MFD setting -- it should read reasonably close to the specs marked on the capacitor.

Condensor fan runs after compressor shuts off

If new motor is 4 wire verses 3 wire use seperate capacitor between brown wires and don't use terminal on 3 pole cap. If this motor has a white strip on one brown wire you can wire it the old way using only 1 brown wire and tape off the other. Can't remeber this morning which brow wire to use . I need to leave. Goole replacemotor with 2 brown wires for more info or call where you bought it. Sorry got to run.

Want to know capacitor specs. for 3 ton Janitrol Condensor Unit Fan motor capacitor and Compressor capacitor

The capaitors should be clearly marked on the original capacitors. You will find a voltage rating and an MFD rating printed on them. The rule is you can go 10% over but never under on the ratings.

Condensor motor turn very slowly.

I do believe you will find the Mother Board is the cause of your problem. I also believe your original motor was ok. The motor runs on DC voltage. There are 3 wires to the motor. The red wire is a sensor wire. The other 2 wires should provide 12 to 13 or so volts DC to the motor. If it is not the mother board is bad.
I hope I helped. supertechks
