Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hi I recently purchased two external 3.5" SATA HDD enclosures type: Antec MX-100. Both hold an identical Seagate 500GB drive. One is used on our laptop and the other on a brand new machine with an ASUS motherboard. Both worked the first time, Vista found and installed the drivers and they showed up as good drives. After rebooting both, the laptop and the regular PC brought the above error message and even after unplugging and reconnecting the drives do not show up anymore. Since I just happen to have the same issue one two machine with exactly the same components I know it has to do with the Antec enclosure. please advise.

    the exact message is:
    "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this issue click this message."

Clicking it just show a screen telling me that it is an unknown device.

Surprisingly when I turn the drive ON while the PC is running it shows up just fine. It even allows me to transfer files. But upon rebooting I get the same error message. I tried this twice - that's why we have this delay.

I have been playing more with that and yes, when I power down the HDD enclosure itself and re-power it while leaving the PC alone the PC see's the external drive just fine. This message just comes when we reboot or shut-down the PC and back on while leaving the drive powered up.

What exactly is the error message?

This an unusual problem. Since you have two of these that are doing the same exact thing, there has to be a issue with the circuit board in the enclosures themselves. The usb ports have a 5 volt output that the boards are conflicting with. Have you tried to power them off and back on when this error message comes up instead of unplugging the usb cables?

I've been trying to dig up some info about this issue with antec but to know avail. I own 5 different external hard drive enclosures none of them antec's. I do not have this issue with any of them. I believe that it is a problem that can only be addressed by antec. I personally use antec cases and power supplies and the few issues that i've run into have been taken care of by antec with very satisfying results. I would contact their customer support center at 1-800-22ANTEC. Since this is happening on two different computers there are no settings in the systems that would make a difference. I am sorry I am unable to help any further.

My HDD Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB is not recognized by win7. I have connected it like a ex USD HDD, but there is no USB devices in Device manager. The hdd is clicking -1sec click, 0,5sec off. Thanks,...

Hi, it might be a file system error.
You could try removing the hdd from the usb enclosure and connect it directly to your pc via SATA.
(power off both of them before doing so)
If it really is the file system then scan disk should repair it automatically when turning on the pc.
Then if the pc recognizes it you can put it back in the usb enclosure.
Good luck!

Can I use the Antec MX-25 to transfer files from my PC (desktop)

Hi,

The answer is yes and no. The Antec MX25 is just an enclosure for a hard drive, you will need to purchase a separate hard drive to put into the enclosure. Think of it like an empty box to hold the hard drive. Once you have it fitted out with a hard drive, you can then transfer files from your PC to the drive and then take them wherever you need.

The hard drive you will need will be a 2.5" SATA hard drive, up to a maximum 500GB in size.

Hope this helps.

My seagate external hdd 500gb is not working and is not detected and regonised in any pc..

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

How can i make my seagate hard disk an usb hard

It is quite easy, do not worry.
You only need to bought and USB enclosure, here is a link to many products on ebay
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=p0.m37.l1313&satitle=hard+drive+enclosure+usb&category0=

then you have to connect your hard drive inside the enclosure and the enclosure to your computer using the usb cable and that's it.
Just be carefull about the enclosure, I guess it is a Hard drive from a desktop, is in it? because some enclosure are for laptop's hard drive.
Also you need to know if your hard drive is SATA or IDE, IDE is the normal gray bus cable with fourty some pins, and the SATA it is a really small cable (I do not use technicims to not confuse you even more).

Also, there are some adapters from IDE/SATA to USB that you can buy in your local computer store (do not go to bestbuy, compusa, ... they only sell external hd), or also get it from ebay.
The only diference between the enclosure and the adapter is that the enclosure looks better :D, and the adapter is just a bunch of cables.

I bought this Seagate Freeagent external hard drive less than a year ago and the other day when I plugged it in I came to the cold realization that it had overheated. There is a known problem with the...

Most of these external hard drives are just regular old 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives in some sexy looking enclosure. Hopefully just the power supply to the drive overheated and did not do any damage to your data.

Disconnect the unit from the mains (duh!) and carefully disassemble the unit until you can get at the drive itself. Disconnect the drive, and see if it is an EIDE or SATA drive. Again, the drive itself is going to look a lot like one your've seen inside your computer because in 99% of cases it is the same thing.

Purchase another external enclosure for the proper type of interface (SATA or EIDE), or , if there is room in the PC itself, actually install the drive in your PC as an auxiliary drive.

Data retrieved.

Voila!

An external USB drive consists of tow parts:

a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and

an enclosure

The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.

Hope that's what you mean.
