Question about Hitachi 43UWX10B 43" Rear Projection Television
.)This kind of trouble happens for a reason. The two convergence chips have a metal back and are bolted to either one large or two smaller heat sinks to keep them cool---a white grease is applied to the back of each chip to move heat fast---after some years the grease dries out and a chip reaches a point where it cannot move the heat fast enough and it goes.
.) You can locate the chips inside the set--they are black, 2 1/2 inches wide and about 1 1/2 inches tall with the STK number printed on them in white--most of these sets use either STK-392-110 OR STK-392-150 CHIPS---the 150 chip is a higher current and longer lasting version of the 110 chip. You can buy a pair of these chips on Ebay for less than 13 dollars plus shipping.
.)The chips have 18 pins each and need to be unsoldered to replace them----Most of the time you just need to replace both chips and adjust the set with a remote control---I did two Friday---takes about a hour to do this repair.
.) I do not know what level of skill you have but if you can do this yourself--you will save some real money--once the chips are replaced and the set adjusted--it will not have this problem again for 5-8 years---about the only problem this kind of set has.
.) If you cannot do this look for someone in your area who can do this---some shops will TRY to charge 300-400 to do this repair--I have done hundreds of these sets and here I charge 200-250 total cost.
.) If you call and they say it "has to go to the shop" keep looking as any good tech can do this repair right in your home.
.) Now is the slow time of year for TV repair shops--shop around and make SURE WHOEVER DOES THIS REPAIR CHANGES BOTH OF THE CHIPS---if only one gets replaced you will have the same problem again and soon.
.) Yes, sometimes there will be a bad resistor or two damaged by one of the chips---no big deal--any good tech will be prepared for this.
.) If you have ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP LET ME KNOW- I am here to help people.
.) I do this here for free so if this information has helped you take a minute and give me a vote here. Remember, IF you have questions just reply to this post here and I will try to help or advise you.
