Remove bios battery and erase new bios (usually a pair of pins to short). If USBs now work - don't upgrade bios! If bios settings have no setting for diabling USB, motherboard failrure seems likely. Try a PCI USB card to provide sockets.

Same here, except that I haven't even been able to get 512MB x 4 to work. Also upgraded BIOS. Did it run OK on 1GB x 2? (Mine does.)

I have recently upgraded my ram from 516 to 2 x

Hello,
Try installing one module only. (You may have to try in first slot, and then if it does not work, in the second slot.) If the 1gb module is recognized install the second one.
If all else fails, the modules may be incompatible with your motherboard, or 1gb exceeds the capacity of the slot.

Hope it helps

Adding ram do I need BIOS update see detailed question

I don't think that this will work! I think 512 is the maximum for it. May be it'll just improve speed a little but it's always risky to update BIOS on older PCs. And this 512 sticks will cost you a lot. I think you better think to buy a new PC. Good Luck!

The Bios on the laptop motherboard only will recognize a total of 1gig Ram. So the 256 stick would be removed and 2- 512 sticks installed.

Wrong BIOS Id

Go to Compaq and download the original bios from them. If that takes then you should be able to change it to what ever you like.

Motherboard ASUS P5RD1-VM ram problem

More people should complain with Asus support. Checking Asus forums, you'll find there's an obvious problem with a PCI-E video addon + 2 used memory slots. In my case, I had 2Gb (1 + 1), mb with bios version 1104, and it worked fine; when I installed a new PCI-E card, the system was very... very sluggish. Now I have uninstalled 1 memory, I'm using only 1Gb of RAM with the PCI-E card, and it's working well.

Again: checking Asus forum, this is a reported problem, and a bios bug... Asus should release a new bios version, but they seem not to bother, as this is a relatively "old' mb...
