Question about IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 Notebook

1 Answer

Thinkpad T20 won't power up

When I push the power button, the led flashes green for an instant, then immediately goes off, as if something is tripping, like a breaker. I own two other T20's and by swapping parts with the ones that do work, I have eliminated as the cause the battery, charger and the keyboard assembly where the on/off switch is located. Is there a breaker, or reset switch somewhere on the T20 ? Do they have an internal voltage regulator ? What could be the problem ? The laptop is in very good shape and has never been dropped or bumped. It worked fine up until last week when this problem started. Thanks for any assistance you can offer....Mike

Re: Thinkpad T20 won't power up

I know it sounds wierd, but take out the memory, and install 1 piece from one of the working machines. Put the cover back on, but as you boot, put pressure on the cover, as if to push the memory into the motherboard.
These have this happen alot.
Good luck

When button pushed it just blinks and goes off with battery or power cable voltage is good

Sounds like either RAM (reseat it and try it out) or that the power supply is not delivering power properly.

You may have a bad DC connector:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

The t30 light goes immediately from green to orange and won't power up. I just replaced the fan

Remove all power sources(battery and AC adapter) from the laptop. With the power source out, press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Then, power on the laptop using the AC adapter only. If this does not work, issue might have something to do with the motherboard.

Laptop Not booting - No Screen

Clean your memory card, or reseat it. Clean the edge connector with soft eraser if reseating doesn't solve it. Do this when battery is disconnected, completely turn off and no other power supply is connected to it. If not maybe ram failed already. This is the first step before going to anything. For additional instructions try to find it in youtube. Post us some update.tnx

Power supply

This is a common problem, that involves the power management system on the motherboard. There are few places that can fix the problem, and they will cost you more than replacing the motherboard. I'm going to suggest replacing the motherboard, it's much cheaper and easier than trying to repair the old board. You can find one at a decent price on Ebay. Here's a link for the hardware maintenance manual for the T20 if you would like to replace the board yourself.

My ibm thinkpad booting and hanging fault

Try this... to see if your video card is bad...
Connect your laptop to an external monitor and press the Function key plus F5 on the laptop... if your OS shows up on the monitor screen, then you have a bad video card...

If its not the video, Bad Ram might be the cause.
And worst case.. Need Motherboard replaced...

I would say the hard drive is failing. But need to run a diagnostic on it to be sure.

If you would like to know where to get the ibm / hitachi hard drive diagostic let me know. It's free for download and you can get a bootable ISO image to burn onto cd. Allowing you to boot from cd in order to test the drive.

As far as replacing, you should be good with a 60gb or 80gb. Did it orginally have a 20gb in it? I would say for most people, 60-80 is way more than enough. Unless you have a ton of music or pictures.
