Question about PNY 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive - Grey/Black

1 Answer

4GB Attache flash drive says it's locked.

I'm using a Macbook, and want to delete all files and reformat my flash drive.  The disk utility informs me that my drive is locked and now read only.  I can't delete a single file, much less reformat it.  The drive is a PNY Optima Attache 4GB. What do I do?

There isn't a box to check to change it from read only to read/write. I did use it on a PC (Vista) as well. Is this the end of my flash drive? I know it's not terribly pricey, but I hate throwing something out if I can repair it.

Plug in the stick. wait for it to come up on the desktop then click on it once. (do not open it).
From the file menu select "Get Info"
In the panel that opens up you will see a row of coloured squares. Underneath is a checkbox marked "Locked"
Is it empty or ticked?
If it's ticked, untick and see what happens in disk utility. If it's not ticked that then would appear to be a problem with the stick.
For what it's worth, I did a google on this stick and found that there are numerous posts about it becoming read only on Vista, so it may well be a problem with the manufacturer.

Check to see if you have the lock switch on, this is a small slider on the side of the card. If it's enabled you will need to slide it to unlock and place it back into the computer/camera. You will then be able to delete the contents of the card.

There are most likely hidden files still left on the drive. Your best bet is to reformat the drive (this will remove all files from the drive and make it like new). To do this, open up the Mac OS X Disk Utility (found in Applications > Utilities). Check out this video for a step-by-step tutorial.

Just bought a 4gb attache, plugged it into the usb on macbook pro and nothing happens

You can try going to the Disk Utility (which is under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility), selecting the drive (if it appears) and click "Mount". If it doesn't show up in the Disk utility, then the device may not be connected properly, the USB port may not be functioning, or the device may be malfunctioning. You may try reformatting the drive with the Disk Utility if it is blank and you are just using it for the first time.

Try reformatting it to FAT32 (which works well with both Mac and Windows):

**THIS WILL DELETE ALL THE DATA ON THE DRIVE**

1. Open Finder
2. Applications 3. On the left column, you should see your thumb drive. Click on it.
4. Click on the "Erase" tab near the top
5. For "Format:" select "FAT32"
6. Click on the "Erase..." button

You need to format your drives. Even though you delete files on them a small amount of data remains each time. After so long the data builds up and clogs the drive.

Insert a USB with a problem
Go applications, Disk utility
open disk utility, then you should see the USB disk in the utility screen. click on then click format. It will kill all data on the USB and make it usable again.

Reformatting.

hi there,
you can Format your drive on a Windows machine as "FAT32" and it will be usable both under Mac OS X and Windows. the only thing to make note of is there are some limitations on the FAT32 format, like the 4GB filesize limit and certain naming restrictions.

You can reformat your drive by opening Disk Utility and then reformatting it using that application. in Mac OS X

- In Disk Utility, select the disk.
- Click Erase.
- Choose format from the Volume Format pop-up menu
(select the windows based format).
- Type a name for the disk or volume.
- Click Erase.
- You can use the drive on both the mac and a PC by choosing MS-DOS from the Disk Utility application when you're about to reformat.
