We installed additional memory in our dell dimension 4600 pc and now the monitor won't work. It's a new monitor so that should not be the issue. any ideas?

First check the obvious stuff. Power switch(s) on monitor itself, data and power cables. (Use others if available.)
If you have another monitor, swap and check to see if the computer is delivering a signal.
Or try the monitor on another system.
See this troubleshooting guide.
Maybe reseat the ram, or check to be sure you haven't exceeded the maximum your system will allow. (4Gb) (see here)
Depending on which CPU is installed in your system, (FSB 800 vs.533 MHz) your choice of memory modules may not be correct. Check to make sure. (Run Everest home edition to see which you have. download here.)
That's all I can think of.
Good luck.

Memory won't cause this problem. You probably bumped the cable running to the video card from the motherboard and dislodged it. Reopen the PC and trace the wires from the video output card to see if it is still connected to the motherboard. Also make sure the external cable running from the video card to the monitor is not loose. And that the monitor is turned on and connected before you turn on the PC.

First be sure all the cables are connected properly. Next double check you did not accidently disconnect anything inside the case. If all that is good try putting the old memory back in and see if that resolves the issue. Also, be aware that static electricity can reek havoc within your computer. To be on the safe side, be sure to always use an anti-static wrist-band when doing any work inside the case or handling components,

Plug the monitor into another computer to determine if the monitor is damaged or working properly. You can also plug another monitor into your computer to determine the same thing.

I have a dell dimension 4600. It has original memory cards installed. 2 256 MB for a total of 512 ram. I recently tried to install 1 GB memory card. When I start up computer it beeps several times,...

hello

several beeps in a system is caused by a memory issue -- If you've recently added or tried to add additional memory to the computer and have started getting these beeps. Remove all new memory you've added to the computer. If the computer works fine after removing the new memory you're encountering either an incompatibility or defective new memory.

Sometimes when the computer is moved and/or over time a memory stick can become loose causing the computer to be unable to read the memory or get errors as it's reading it. Try fixing this issue by opening the computer removing each of the memory sticks you have in the computer and then placing them back into the computer.

If reseating the memory did not resolve the issue try swapping the location of the memory. If you have only one stick of memory in the computer try moving it to another slot and then boot the computer.

If you have more than one stick of memory try removing all but one stick of memory and boot the computer. If this does not resolve the issue try removing that stick of memory and try one of the other sticks of memory.

the specs can be found at this link
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/specs.htm

the system you have is upgradable to 4G of RAM, and this RAM must be installed in equal pairs
so if you have 4 slots to insert memory in (assuming you will retain the 2 256M) , you must install the other slots by 2 512M, 2 1G or 2 2G DIMMs -- make sure you isntall exact same DIMMs, dont mix memory makers or specs, other than what Dell specifies

memory type must be
PC2700 (333-MHz) or PC3200 (400-MHz) DDR SDRAM
(non-ECC)

i hope this helps --

My monitor has gone to Power Save Mode

Hello,
If your monitor is going in Power save mode it can be cause by following reasons.
>Check the data cable going from monitor to your Dell Dimension 4600 Tower is connected properly. The connector will be blue or white in colour.
>If the Dell Dimension 4600 Tower is powering on.

If still in power save mode then try to shutdown Tower and monitor, disconnect power cable from tower and monitor.Hold the power button on tower for 15 seconds. Then again try to connect monitor and check,if still nogo, and if tower has no lights then issue with motherboard or video card or power supply. If possible try connect spare known good monitor.

Thankyou

Extended Desktop on Dell Dimensions 4600

yes your right..leave it set to AUTO BUT ONLY USE THE ATI CHIP SET VIDEO CARDS.

Dell Dimension 4600 We saw great image quality from the 17-inch E171FP analog LCD monitor that accompanied our review system. Text looked sharp and evenly focused at all sizes, while colors appeared lifelike, with evenly saturated tones in our photo test screen, in a DVD movie, and during a session of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. As part of a new case design for Dell's midrange Dimension line, the 4600 has eight USB 2.0 ports, more than on most value (and some power) systems: six on the back and two up front. An audio port for connecting headphones sits next to the front USB ports.
The compact 4600 does not have the tool-less accessibility of its predecessor, the Dimension 4500, although opening the case is easy: Just depress a thick L-shaped lever and lift off the side panel. You'll need a screwdriver to add a PCI card or a hard drive; unlike the 4500 series, which secured expansion cards and drives with innovative quick-release mechanisms, the 4600 series uses screws. Our test configuration had only one available drive bay (a vertically mounted internal bay), and it's a struggle to use it. You must remove four screws (two on the bottom of the case and two inside) and take out the bay holding the existing hard drive along with the empty bay that's crammed up against the front of the case. The two open PCI slots are reasonably easy to access, but to reach the two open memory sockets, you must push aside a snarl of data and power cables.
The Dimension 4600 we tested came with a 2.8-GHz Pentium 4 processor and 512MB of DDR400 memory. It earned a PC WorldBench 4 score of 122, about average for similarly configured systems. The ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card is not a top-of-the-line board, but it yielded solid frame rates in our gaming tests. And it's perfectly fine for playing games at moderate resolution, especially considering that the bundled LCD monitor won't display anything higher than 1280-by-1024 resolution. It has a combination DVI/analog-out port (you use an adapter to hook up an analog monitor), plus S-Video-out and composite-out ports to output video to a TV.

Please leave comment and feeb back.
Thanks

Dell 4600 no monitor signal

Hey Tony,
If you haven't already: pull all pci cards:
If you pull the ram, and you get no beeps at post, it's likely the main board. Does the pc beep at all? with or without ram? If not, likely the main board. Sorry. Hope this helps...

can you chk anything abt the lights on the monitor ? ie.. the small ones near the power switch .. is it green / orange ..

Also do u hear any beeps when you power on your computer ? I vaguely remember that in case you hear three beeps, it could be a video card issue.
