1 Answer

I have the same symptom on my JVM1350AW

When it starts it sounds normal but makes a louder hum after about 1 second. It does not heat.

Your diagnosis was right-on. I ordered and installed a new magnetron and all is back to normal. I suspected that the problem was the magnetron but your response gave me the confidence to go ahead and spend the money to order the part. Thanks for your help. Well worth the $13!

Your mag tube (Magnatron) is bad. This is what creates the heat in a micro wave. If you have it fixed, it would cost you in my area (Not sure about your area) around $170.00 plus 1 1/2 hour labor @ $69.95 per hr. Some companies go by National flat rate, it calls for $180.00 labor. If you can replace it yourself, you are looking at $157.29 plus freight for the mag tube from www.partselect.com ..
To repair. Remove unit from over stove, remove case. (Be sure to bleed capacitor off to ground before working on the insides of this micro wave. This type stores HIGH Voltage) Locate the mag tube, unplug and remove. Replace with new part. Reassemble unit and re-install. This will fix the problem.

Just checking. Have you repaired your unit? If so, was it what I diagnosed?

When you start the microwave it starts normally with a low hum, then a couple of seconds into it the hum gets louder. After the cook time has expired the food is still frozen. Is there something I can do...

Replace the magnetron by the sounds of it. The hum gets louder a second or so into "Cooking", that would comply with the magnetron heaters coming on and working into a dead magnetron. It could be capacitor or diode of course.

The microwave oven turns on but does not heat

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, your symptoms, as well as the answers to this question:

- Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

(A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.)

Microwave makes deep humming sound and doesn't heat

Your magnetron that actually does the cooking is making that humming sound. That part needs to be replaced before it starts blowing your fuse inside the microwave. That part is the one located on top behind the control panel of your microwave and is about the size of a persons hand (sometimes smaller sometimes bigger). With everthing unplugged you can take the cover off and see it. It has some cooling fins on it and is held in place with only three to four screws. There are three to four wires that come out of it and go to only a couple of places one of them being a large capacitor that is about three to four inches long with terminals at its top. Find a magnetron at a local tv repair shop (reputable), a local electronic supply house (they can order you one) or on the internet. They cost from $25 to $60 depending on size of microwave. If you can do it yourself you can save about $40 to $50. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
