Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Amana not cooling

I have an Amana side by side that has trouble cooling. Last weekend it quit cooling, and the ice was melting on the freezer side and the refrigerator side was warm. I opened the evaporator access panel and there was some frost on the coils. I defrosted these with a hair dryer, cycled the timer manually, and cleaned the coils underneath. Both fans work, and the compressor was warm but not hot. It came back on, and the temp in the freezer dropped to about 0 deg F. It ran pretty much continuously for several days, but I've started having the same problem again.
I replaced the timer today, but tonight it is doing it again. I pulled the evaporator panel off again, and again there was some frost buildup, but not what I would think is a lot.
When I cycle the defrost timer manually, the heating element is coming on.
Any ideas? Defrost thermostat maybe?

    The model number is SXD26VW

    Thanks for the response.
No, in watching it the frost starts at the top and migrates down the coils. About 5 hours ago the freezer was at about 20 deg F, it is now at just below 0 deg F. There is a dusting of frost all over the coils, the wiring harness, and the fan, and all of the internals actually. Should there be any frost at all if the defrost cycle is running as it should?
It seems to cool pretty well when I do the manual defrosting, it just eventually stops cooling. I don't know if the thermostat is not kicking the defroster on or what. In a few hours I guess the timer should put it in defrost, so I'll try to listen to see if it shuts down. I haven't noticed that it has yet.

OK, the eight hour defrost time just shut the unit off. I can feel some heat radiating form the defrost heating element at the bottom of the evaporator coils. This is the first time that I have felt the element heating since I manually cycled and defrost about 8 hours ago. There is frost accumulated on the coils and fins that was visible at the time the timer started the defrost cycle.
Should the thermostat be starting the defrost cycle before the 8 hour timer does if there is noticeable frost on the coils?
I'll check the unit later to see if it is holding temp (still just below 0 deg F) and if it cycles back on in about 20 minutes.

OK, the unit just restarted. The temp in the freezer got up to right at 32 deg F. I have the temp dial settings (located in the rear of the refrigerator compartment) set to just over medium (about 5 on the 1-7 scale).
I'll see if the evaporator fan comes and if the compressor starts up again, and if it starts cooling again.

OK, after about ten minutes since the condenser fan came back on, the temp has fallen back down to about 20 deg F. The compressor is warm, but not hot.
It seems to be working OK so far, but I have no idea what happened. I'll keep checking it and see how it does.

Alright, been through two defrost timer cycles. The temp climbed up to about 20 after it defrosted, but has generally been holding around 2 deg F. I am guessing the temp spike was due to there not being much of anything in the freezer (we took most of the stuff out when it started acting up).
I'll check it again through the night, and if it is still having problems I'll switch out the defrost thermostat.
    Thanks-

Take the back cover off and look at the frost. If the frost is only at the bottom of the coils then you are low on R-12 or R-134 and the defrost t-stat is cutting out to quick. If the coils are well frosted then you have a bad t-stat.

when it stops cooling, you will see some ice build up in the freezer. Letting it sit unplugged melts the ice and you will see some water under the fridge. Connect power and it works. Cause: don't overload the fridge and the freezer. Make sure the doors close snugly. Clean all lint build ups by vacuuming under and behind the fridge after switching off power.

I have an Amana BX21VW refrigerator and both the freezer and refrigerator stopped cooling. The fan is still going and there is power, but no cooling of any kind. What is going on?

Hi!!

Check

Temp. control knobs,

Most likely, the evaporator coil is covered w/ice, obstructin the air flow thru it and to the fridge side of the unit.

Remove freezer back panel (where the little fan is) and check for iced evaporator coil, if so, unplug unit and use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt ice, make sure all ice is melted andthe air duct going to the fridge is clear.

Once this is done, restart unit and set temp. 1/3 of the dial, ie. if the dial goes from 0-9, set it on 3. wait 24 hrs to make adjustments

Keep me posted!! Rate this post!!!

Refrigerator acts like it's defrosting. Gets warm, ice melts, then gets cold again, for about 3 months. Except this last time. Fans working but neither side getting cold.
