Question about Kenmore 20.6 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator

Condensation drain hose freezes - water drains into frig.

Kenmore Mdl 77292790 Top Freezer. I've had the drain tube freeze 3 times now - 1st after 5 yrs, 2nd after 1-2 yrs, 3rd after 2 mos. So it seems I'm addressing the symptoms and not the problem. It seems likely something is wrong with the defrost system. How do I troubleshoot the several components so I'm not just throwing parts at it?

The problem is probably the drain itself. It is probably partially clogged. Another thing could be ice build up. I will usually get a peice of metal coat hanger a few inches long and I will hook it over the defrost heater and let in hang into the hole about an inch or so. That way when the unit defrosts that hanger will heat up and keep it from freezing.

I had the same problem..OMG, water would be inside the fridge itself. I would clear the water in the freezer, but water would clog the drain hose and freeze.

I finally took a long screwdriver and shoved it down the drain hole. This finally did it. The other thing I tried, but for me it did not work, was pour hot water down the drain hole. Keep an eye on the drain pan. The screwdriver technique worked, no more problem. It must of been solid, but heck, nothing showed up in the drain pan.

Your defroster inside the fridge may not be doing a good enough job to keep the drain from freezing up. Check to see if the drain pan is frozen over in the freezer section. I took the cover off the inside of the freezer and wrapped a piece of uninsulated 14 gauge solid copper wire around the heating element and pushed one end down the inside of the drain tube and wrapped the other end around the heating element. No problems since.

Frigidaire FRS26ZNH frig is freezing water in the bottom of the freezer and is leaking water onto the floor.

Hi

The drain hole is clogged. Remove the food and do a complete defrost. Most of the time the blockage is caused by ice in drain line. If that does not fix the problem, the drain hose to evaporator is clogged. The drain line (TUBE-DRAIN) is part 64 in diagram below. Click on the picture to enlarge:

Water drain tube is plugged, leaks inside the frig

Water accumulating on the ceiling of the refrigerator is usually caused by a clogged drain in the freezer section beneath the evaporator. The clogged drain will cause water from the self defrost cycle to leak into the divider between the freezer and refrigerator. This water may then freeze and cause condensation build-up on the refrigerator ceiling. The solution to this problem begins with unclogging the drain. It may also be necessary to remove the entire freezer/refrigerator divider to thoroughly dry the insulation in the divider. Occasionally the insulation needs to be replaced to prevent a recurrence of the problem.

Water in fridge

First, empty freezer and fridge. Unplug and leave door open for at least 3-4 hours. Blow out drain lines with compressed air. It is more likely that the drain line is clogged than frozen; but a clogged drain line will freeze-up quickly.

WATER AND ICE INSIDE MY FRIG

Most likely whats happening is you have a frozen drain for the defrost cycle. here are step by step instrutions for repair
  • Unplug refrigerator
  • unload food from freezer
  • remove icemaker if present (there are 3 screws remove the one on the bottom and loosen the 2 on top of icemaker then lift it off the 2 screws unplug from wiring harness)
  • remove 2 screws holding rear cover in place
  • move cover to the side or remove from unit altogether
  • defrost any and all ice from bottom of freezer and aluminum drain pan that is now exposed
  • flush drain hole that you will see once ice is cleared with warm water. (sometimes I use a large syringe or turkey baster to forcefully flush hot water thru the drain tube)
  • reassemble in reverse order

These are general instrutions for most top freezer refrigs. but if you need more specific directions dont hesitate to ask Thanks Peyton

I replaced my "entire" ice cube maker (tube, hoses, water pump, ice maker) and it still pooled water at the bottom. I removed the back panel in the freezer and noticed the ciols go through a defrost cycle and water forms in tray under coils. I removed the lower panel on rear of fridge -and found a drain hose near the water solenoid/pump. I blew compressed air into the hose and hopefully unblocked it so it can drain into the pan not the freezer.

Water acculation in refridgerator.

I had a similar problem with my old hotpoint frig (top freezer, bottom frig). the defrost cycle would come on and melt the ice, but since the drain plug in the back of the freezer below the coils would eventually freeze up closed due to ice accumulation. It got to the point I had to shut down the whole unit and leave it open for around 8 hours to let it naturally melt the ice in the drain tube. I hear a gurgle sound and then a sound of water flowing, so I knew it was now draining again.
