Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

3 Answers

I have a canon A720 IS with the same problem

The date occasionally stays set after I turn the camera off. But mostly the date resets to 0. I've tried changing the cr-1220 battery. My daughter has the same camera, without the date problem.

Yes, it was installed correctly. I thought of that so, I tried it the other way then I double checked the manual.

I found and posted a solution about adjusting the battery contacts that seems to work. The battery holder is a little loose, which probably It also explains why the camera occasionally kept the date.

Not to demean your intelligence in any way, but, are you certain that the battery is inserted correctly? I only ask, because, I did the same thing.

Arignote,

i have the canon a720IS and was having similar problem with my date/time. once i discovered the small cr1220 battery next to the regular battery compartment, i replaced it but the problem still was there.

i looked closely at the cr1220 compartment and took a toothpick and just pulled the metal prongs out a bit, so that they were in better contact with the cr1220 battery. ever since then i've had no problems.

good luck.

A bit of a special case.

My A700 had been submerged in water in a canoe trip. The objective seized midway, and I did not manage to get it in any more, even though the camera responded to the main switch for a while. I took the main batteries out, but I did not notice the smaller one. I let it dry as far as I could in my tent.

At home I discovered the smaller battery and took it out. But it had already left some brown residue.

Just to give it a try, I disassembled the back to let it dry better (I had found some movies how to do so). It did not look too bad inside.

After drying, I reassembled, put in fresh batteries and tested. To my surprise it all functioned again, except..
- There were some minor flaws on the screen.
- There was a central haze over pictures.
- Time did not get preserved.

After some weeks I tested again.
- The screen flaws were still there, but not important.
- The haze seemed to have gone.
- The time problem was still there.

Now I was thinking about roughing up the contacts (risky), or using a contact spray (not sure that is any good), but the solution turned to be simple: using a couple of swabs!

I tried one and it clearly took off dirt. Testing the camera it had not made any difference. But after repeating a couple of times the time sticked!

So that was it, and now I have got a camera in working order again!

Just a note. The (slight) haze is still there. It is caused by some visible spot of something between lenses. O well, not too bad.

Have you been to the support section of the Canon website to check for firmware updates?

Ahhh, I notice you are trying to collect 'points' by massively posting trivial answers, which are way besides the point...

Time date stamp needs to be reset every time I turn on the camera, even with new button battery

Upgrade your firmware, or get your little tablet battery checked, the date stamp does not get its power from the reset batteries but a built in one built exclusively for it.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here:

Time and date resetting constantly...

This camera has a separate date battery. Lift up the small rectangular cover next to the main batteries. A small CR1220 battery maintains the date. Replace it and you should be OK. I just discovered this on the Canon web site.

The date stamp only works in "Postcard" resolution. Press the "Func Set" button, then scroll down to the bottom to select postcard resolution.

Then press the menu button. Select the "Camera" menu, then scroll down to the the Date Time Stamp selection to turn it on.

I have to set the date/time every time I turn on my Canon A720. Once I've set the date/time, it stays set until I turn the camera off.

YOUR PROBLEM SHOULD BE OVER! ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR CAMERA IN THE COMPARTMENT WHERE THE TWO BATTERIES GO IS A SMALL DOOR. THIS IS THE CLOCK BATTERY DOOR! YOUR CLOCK BATTERY MUST BE DEAD OR MOSTLY DEAD. AT LEAST IT IS WORTH CHECKING OUT. THIS IS THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE OF TIME DATE FAILURE BECAUSE IT WILL RUN WITH THE MAIN BATTERY POWER WHEN THE CAMERA IS ON, BUT WHEN YOU TURN IT OFF, THIS SMALL BATTERY IS SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE TIME, DATE CURRENT IN THE OFF MODE AND IT IS DOING IT! CHECK IT OUT AND SEE IF THIS DOESN'T SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. GOOD LUCK! HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU!!

Unable to display Date or time in pictures taken from Canon PowerShot A720 IS

You have to select 'Postcard' for the image size -- on the same menu as L, M1, M2, M3, S, Postcard.

Powershot A720 Date Function

Do you want date/time stamp?

If so, you will have to be in postcard resolution.
To achieve this you will put your camera in shooting mode, hit function/set button, arrow down to bottom left corner where you will see L, M, S and postcard modes. Select the one that looks like a postcard.

Hit function/set to get out of there. Now hit menu and go to setup menu (tools) and arrow down to date stamp and make sure it's on date and time.

images shot in this resolution will look good as 4x6 prints, but should not be printed any larger or they will look pixelated, not good quality for larger prints.

Either that or you can add date and time in the Zoombrowser program that came with your camera should you need larger prints with date/time stamp.

I hope this helps!

Canon Pwershot A720 Date and Time Function

If you are trying to get the date/time displayed in your images, you need to set the recording size (L, M1, M2, M3, S, Postcard) to Postcard. You also need to turn the Date Stamp on in the Recording Menu (Use the Menu button, select the recording tab -- silhouette of a camera, and scroll down to Date Stamp).
