Question about Watches

1 Answer

We recently purchased a Howard Miller Grandfather Clock SN#402180 and model #610-160. It was originally purchased in 1984. We are the 2nd owners. Anyway, we cannot get it to keep perfect time. It runs fast and we have unscrewed the pendulum nut until the bottom fell off. Is there anything else we can do short of resetting it about twice a day? reply to: ebcharpie@centurytel.net Would you have any idea on the present day value of this clock? Thanks.

Just taking a stab that someone replaced the suspension spring with one that is too long, and beyond the pendulum adjustment.

I purchased a Howard Miller grandfather clock and the clock is keeping time but pendulum is barely moving. What's the problem?

Hi Pam,
I have a Howard Miller Grandfather clock and the pendulum swings very slowly and from far left to far right travels only about three inches at best. It doesn't need to move any more than that to make the "Verge" move the "Escape Wheel" to rotate the gears to keep the hands moving at the correct tick.

If the clock has a real clockspring mechanism ( with dozens of visible gears), then the problem is likely it needs to be cleaned.and adjusted.

Just bought a Howard Miller 620-160 wall clock. The pendulum is not swinging! What is wrong?

First thing to check is for locks that are put in when shipping so that it wont be damaged. If it is battery powered, check the battery.

I believe the grandfather clock I was given was over wound by the previous owner. Is there anyway that I can fix this myself so that it is affordable?

If you have the patience, you could try the following.
Set the pendulum in motion - this will slowly wind down the mainspring. The clock will probably stop after a few seconds. Set the pendulum swinging again as necessary, and if you're lucky the period that it ticks for will increase each time.
You will need to be patient and persevere - what you are doing is very gently releasing the tension on the mainspring.
This is not guaranteed to resolve the problem, but it won't harm the clock or your bank balance to try. Failing that, there is a mechanical fault that is causing it not to wind and you are strongly advised to place it in the hands of a reputable and competent clock repairer.

Edward Meyer 31 Day Grandfather Clock manual

I recently bought an Edward Meyer clock from Grandfather clocks for less. The clock is beautiful, but it never chimed. I even took it apart and repaired the chimes, the hammers were too far away from the chiming rods, but now that it does chime, it sounds like someone banging pots and pans together, it's horrible. I've been looking online to find replacement chime and hammer parts so I can fix it myself.

I lost the instructions of my Howard Miller World Time 645-600 Travel Alarm Clock and I don;t know how to set my GMT. its always stuck on london..

Go to their web site "www.howardmiller.com/" and at the bottom of the page there is a menu.

At the bottom of the second column, click on "product manuals" and choose the one that suits your clock.

What ports wind what?

On mine, the center one (@the 6 position) is the one that keeps the pendulum swinging. It is the one that lengthens the most during the week and if I forget to wind it, that pendulum is all the way down when the clock stops.
