I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Did you try removing the USB receiver on the computer, powering down, powering back up and then inserting the receiver so that Windows knows you have a 'new' device.

Computor wont recognize dvd player

You might need to have a computer administrator account to perform some tasks.
Most new devices your computer will recognise automatically. When your comp is running, plug in your new dvd player. Does it beep and say 'New Hardware added? If not then use
The Add Hardware Wizard which enables you to add new hardware or troubleshoot any hardware-related problems.
Open the Add Hardware Wizard

  • To open the Add Hardware Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Printers and Other Hardware. Under See Also, click Add Hardware.
  • If it can't recognise the player, it gives you the option to select the correct make and model. Is yours on the list? If not, you may need to go to the Microsoft site and update the list of players.
  • Do come back here if you need further help.

Simple tip to fix this issue is to Index your Computer and Add Hardware based on the Test Results:

Windows Experience Index rates up your computer. You can add appropriate hardware based on the search results.

  • Click Start.
  • Press ENTER.
  • Windows Experience Index will launch.
  • Click Rate this computer button to start conducting the tests.
  • After these tests are completed, you can get the overall performance results.
You are advised to add new hardware based on the search results. For example, upgrade your processor, add more RAM and add a Graphics Card.
For Instant Fix use Reginout system utility.

The printer driver can be downloaded from the printer manufacture's WEB site.
If you do not know the WEB site, then please let me know the make and model of your printer and the Windows version that is installed on your computer.

My computer wont recognize my 30gb black zune

Make sure the hold/lock is not engaged

Make sure the OS is compatible

Either the device is bad, the pc port is bad, or the software is faulty. Try connecting to different usb port, then a usb port on a different pc with a compatible os. If still not recognized, then there is physical damage to player.

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
